June 29th is Camera Day
you're looking for something to do today then get ready to save some
memories because it's Camera Day! But you probably already
planned on using a camera today, huh? ;) Let's get right into
celebrating Camera Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Well, think about it... how much would you enjoy going through
life these days without having cameras available? Would you enjoy
hiring someone to draw your family portrait? Imagine trying to get the
kids to stay still that long! What about if you happen to have Bigfoot
cross your path? No one is going to believe you without a picture!
Didn't think about that one, now did you? But seriously, cameras have
become such a huge part of all of our lives so it makes sense to want
to celebrate such a handy invention. The first sort of camera
that ever existed was the camera obscura, which was a dark box that had
a tiny hole in it or a convex lens. You'd have to place a piece of
paper or glass into the focus of the lens and then your image would be
projected onto it. So yeah, if you wanted to save that image you had to
trace it by hand. Luckily in 1724 Johann Heinrich Schultz figured out
that a mixture of silver and chalk darkened when exposed to light. So
people could slide in these light sensitive plates before exposing
their camera obscura to light and now had a way to record the image.
But it wasn't until 1826 when Joseph Nicéphore Niépce saved the first
permanent photograph using these methods. Then came copper
plates, then the collodion wet plate in 1850, then came the first color
photograph in 1861 and would you believe that the electronic video
camera tube was actually invented in the 1920s? Yep that's what
eventually spawned the digital cameras that we know and love today!
Aren't you glad you don't have to trace your pictures anymore?
So, how can you celebrate today? Well, do you have a camera?
Then break it out! Find as many excuses you can to use a camera today.
Go on a hike, go to a zoo, catch the sunset or sunrise, get your family
together for family pictures and any other reason you can think of that
you'd want to take a picture. Today's all about freezing those special
moments in the form of a picture and really appreciating that we have
this technology available for us to use today. And if you don't
have a camera then today would be a great day to get yourself one. You
could get any kind you want from a film camera to a disposable camera
to a digital camera to a SLR camera. Get a camera that would suit you
best and then start learning all the ins and outs of your camera. I'm
sure you'll be snapping pictures in no time! And if you want to
make today a little interesting you can tell your friends that you want
to have a little competition to see who is the best photographer. So
each of you will go out on your own with your own camera and then just
take pictures of whatever you want. But you want to keep in mind that
you want to take interesting pictures as well as have them look as best
as possible. Then regroup and decide who took the best picture. And
THEN you go to a place that will print out pictures for you and you all
get a printed copy of the winning picture framed and put in your house.
That way you'll always remember today ;). Have a great day and
don't forget to take a picture of it so you don't forget it!
