If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to be investigated because it's FBI Day!  OK, so you're probably not going to be investigated...  Let's get right into celebrating FBI Day!

Well, this is actually the FBI's birthday! You see in 1886 the Supreme Court said that individual states couldn't regulate interstate commerce. And in 1887, after the Interstate Commerce Act, it was now the federal government's responsibility to regulate such things, so they had to come up with some kind of investigation force. So the Attorney General took 12 special agents from the Secret Service and set up his own Bureau of Investigation. And since it was a federal agency, it was the Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI.  Yep, that's right; the first FBI agents were Secret Service agents during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency and it all began on July 26, 1908. Their first job wasn't exactly the classiest either. The would visit and collect information about brothels as they geared up to enforce the Mann Act AKA the White-Slave Traffic Act.

But they weren't called the FBI at first... they were the BOI or BI and then in 1932 they were called the United States Bureau of Investigation. Then in 1933 they hooked up with the Bureau of Prohibition and their name was changed once again to the DOI, or the Division of Investigation. It wasn't until 1935 that they broke off on their own and became their own service, under the Department of Justice, and were finally called the FBI.  Break out your shades and ear bud and let's roll!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, let's start out with the easiest way. Why don't you look into what the FBI is really all about? You can pick up some books, browse their site online, or watch documentaries or movies. Do your own investigation into what they've done in the past and what they still do today. You might be surprised when you find out some of the things they've done. And really, a lot of is kept secret for that reason until years after it's happened. The public may not approve of half the stuff they do, so they do it under the radar... the jerks!  And you can always try to get a tour of FBI office buildings near you to give some first hand information. You'll get to see their fancy office building, a bunch of pictures and probably get more facts that you care to remember. You might even be lucky enough to get to talk to some active agents. Sure, they can't tell you everything they do but I'm sure they can tell you some good, but censored, stories.  But NO, I do not recommend that you get in trouble so that the FBI visits you at home. Sure, it'll save you a trip and they will give you a lot of attention but it's not a situation you want to be in. I mean, we're talking about a birthday celebration here, not an arrest! If that thought crossed your mind then I recommend that you stay at home today and get yourself some paper and some crayons and draw some pictures of FBI agents. Then tape the pictures to all the walls around you. Now... you are surrounded by FBI agents! Are you happy?  Have a great day and stay out of trouble!
