April 10th is Golfer's Day
you're looking for something to do today then pick up a club and whack
some balls because it's Golfer's Day! Try not to hit anyone!
Let's get right into celebrating Golfer's Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Today is a holiday because on this day in 1916 the
Golfers' Association of America, or PGA, was set up by a department
store manager named Rodman Wanamaker. Wanamaker set up a bunch of
meetings for golfers in the New York area to form a group to help
promote golf and make playing golf a more realistic career choice. It
was set up by 35 charter members and people have fell in love with the
game ever since. Now people have no reason not to play golf, for at
least one day out of the year! The history of golf is a bit
though; everyone has their own story on how it began. Some say it
started with the Roman game of paganica where you'd hit a stuffed,
leather ball with a bent stick. Some say it all began with the Chinese
game of chuiwan, which means striking small ball. There are even
scrolls that show someone swinging what looks like a golf club at a
small ball in hopes of sinking it into a hole. And then of course
there's cambuca in England, chambot in France, chaugan in Persian and
kolven in the Netherlands. We may not be able to agree where
got the idea, but we all can agree that the modern version of golf
began in Scotland. In fact, there are documents from 1457 that ban the
playing of golf because James II thought it was distracting people too
much from learning archery. Eventually it spread from that area and now
you can see people in plaid pants and mint green shirts swinging
different sized clubs at tiny balls in hopes of sinking them in random
holes on some of the nicest plots of land. Fore!
So how can you celebrate today? Well, you can get together
with a bunch of your friends and choose from a variety of different
options when it comes to this game. You could go play miniature golf
and compete to see who can make it through the wacky course the
quickest. This game's all about skilled putting but you don't have to
be a member of a special club to be allowed on the course. Or
can head to the driving range and see how far you can whack some golf
balls. NOW you can use some real power and see who can hit
balls the farthest. Plus you can work on perfecting your
that, when you're playing for real, you always get a good start off the
tee. And then of course you can go play a round of 9 or 18
and cruise around in a golf cart all day. This might take a
longer and require better weather but it's a good excuse to have a
relaxing day out on the course. And yes, I do mean
Don't get mad if you're sucking it up and hitting it in the trees...
you're an adult, outside, playing a game! Be happy that you
do all that instead of getting mad over a game. It'll
save your clubs from getting damaged when you throw them too.
if it's not that nice outside, you're always welcome to curl up on the
couch and watch your favorite golf movie or play a golf video
game. There have actually been some pretty good golf movies
and I grew up playing different golf games. I never got into
actual game of golf but the video games are addicting! Have a
great day and keep your eye on the ball!
