If you're looking for something to do today then enjoy your freedoms on Human Rights Day!  And if you don't know your rights, then you better brush up on them!  But, let's get right into celebrating Human Rights Day!

Because on this day, back in 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which lays out the rights that all humans on Earth have from birth. There are 30 different "articles" that outline the freedoms we all have, and today is a day to celebrate having them. If it weren't for some crummy people having "power" over others in the past, then I'm sure we wouldn't need to write down these rights; we'd just know what's right and wrong when dealing with others. But, without a little evil how would we know what is good, right? So be thankful for all the good things this document lays out.  And do you want to know something cool about this document? It actually holds the world record for being the most "universal" document out there, because it has been translated into 380 different languages and dialects. The more people who know their rights, the better! And it didn't even take them two years to come up with what rights would be listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

And this wonderful document is almost like a contract between the citizens and their governments. If you respect our human rights, and don't trample all over them, then we will continue to let you run the show. Yes... WE WILL LET YOU... there are more every day people out there than there are "people of power". So, if we don't like what's going on, we can take the power back! But documents like this seem to keep the peace, to a degree, and keep us all in check.  You have the right to continue reading.

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, why don't you start out by brushing up on what rights you do have? The Declaration isn't really that long, and you might learn of rights you didn't even know you had! If you're hanging out with friends, you can each take turns reading the articles to the group and then discuss your rights. Did you all know you had those rights? Do you feel like your government is respecting your rights?   And you can even go to Human Rights events all across the globe. But if there isn't one near you, then why don't you set one up? I'm sure you can find many people that want to speak about human rights and tie them into current events. You could even have each speaker talk about a different article or two from the Declaration of Human Rights. But be sure to make it a fun event where people can take part in different aspects, and not just sit there and be lectured to.  And as you go through the Declaration, think about each right... have you ever had your rights restricted unjustly? Have you ever unknowingly restricted the rights of others? Well, then there's really only one way to make sure that it stops happening: you need to ensure that everyone knows their rights! So spread the word about this holiday, link your friends to the Declaration and feel good about opening their eyes to their rights.  Have a great day, because you're allowed to!
