If you're looking for something to do today then I hope the weather is nice where you are because it's Long Walk Day!  Oh yes, breathe in that fresh air!  Let's get right into celebrating Long Walk Day!


Because we all need to unwind! Your job, your kids, your bills, your school... it's all stressing you out! So get outside and plan to take a nice, long walk and slowly release all that stress as you suck in that fresh air. I'm sure you'll see others doing the same thing you are, without even knowing it's a holiday, because a long walk can do more for you than you realize. And it's a good thing that someone set up this day, because now you have a reason to get away from it all for a while!  Walking can actually help you live longer in a variety of different ways. It can help curb cancer, diabetes and heart disease. It can strengthen your bones and keep your cholesterol in a more healthy balance. Walking can even boost your mood and correct your posture. And you're mind's safe too, because walking can help kick Alzheimer's and dementia to the curb!

So I'd say that its' a pretty good thing to get in a long walk today, and many other days, but what do YOU consider a long walk? Is walking from one side of the parking lot to the nearest store a long walk? How about a couple blocks? What about a few miles on a nice walking path? And are you bold enough to take a 10 mile hike today? I guess it's all up to you, how fit you are and how much time you have to spare.  So how long will you be walking today?


So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, if it's crummy outside or you really don't feel like walking outside for some reason, then you can just take a long walk on a treadmill. That's right; pop yourself down in front of a TV or a magazine, set it to a slow pace and get to walking. You're not going to get anywhere but your legs will do a bit of work. And hey, that's all that matters, right?

But if you do want to get outside then plot out your path. How far do you want to go? Can you squeeze in some errands on your walk so that it not only is a healthy jaunt but you're getting some stuff done too? Or, if you want, you can just put your shoes, head out the door and don't even think about a destination or distance. Just keep walking until you feel like turning around!  But if you want to have a little fun today, you can make your walk a competition. If you have GPS on your phone, a pedometer or you can even use Google Maps, then you can compete against your friends to see who can walk the farthest or the fastest. So you want to either limit yourself by a set amount of time or a set distance. Then all of you must agree that you won't run or jog; you're just going to walk! Then you just see who is the best walker by the end of it all. The losers have to take turns giving the winner a piggyback ride all the way back to their house!  Have a great day and enjoy your walk!
