April 18th is National Animal Crackers Day
you're looking for something to do today then maybe you should breakout
a snack food from your childhood because it's National Animal Crackers
Day! Been a while since you chomped on some of these babies,
Let's get right into celebrating National Animal Crackers Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Today is a holiday because these crackers are so commonly
by almost everyone. And if you're sitting there saying, "Not me!" then
ask your parents if they ever fed them to you as a kid. I know I had
them as I grew up and they've been around for a very long time. So the
popularity of a food has once again sparked a new holiday!
shaped cookies called... Animals were imported from England to the
United States in the late 19th century and the public demanded more. So
people started baking them up locally at places like Stauffer's Biscuit
Company in 1871, Dozier-Weyl Cracker Company and Holmes and Coutts
Company. Then came the National Biscuit Company, what we now call
Nabisco, and in 1902 these crackers were known as Barnum's Animals.
are a wide variety of different animal shapes and the containers are
all made to appeal to kids, because that's who will most likely be
eating them. There have even been 37 different animals for Barnum's
Animal Crackers since 1903 and new brands have popped up like Austin
Zoo Animal Crackers and Cadburys Animals. These wonderful little
crackers come in shapes that range from house cats to rhinos and don't
seem to be going away any time soon. So pop a couple in your
mouth today, why don't ya?
So how can you celebrate today? Well, you can easily go to
your local grocery store and pick up a package of any type of animal
cracker you'd like. Then just munch on them all day and share with
others who look a little hungry. And if you have kids then definitely
get them in on it; who knows, you might have a new favorite snack food
on your hands. Kids love being able to play with their food ;).
you could get a bag of each kind and see who has the best animal
cracker recipe. There are even some frosted ones out there that I'm
sure you'll love! You could vote on taste alone or you could throw in
package design and types of animal shapes to really help you decide who
has the best animal crackers. Or you could even try to find
different ways to eat animal crackers. Would they make a good cereal or
can you dunk them in milk like cookies? Would they make a nice addition
to your soup? Are they good when dipped in things like say... ice
cream? If you smashed a bunch into a pie tin would they make a good pie
crust? How about some homemade macaroni and cheese with
animal crackers on top? Get creative and go crazy! You are dealing with
animals after all ;). Have a great day and get to chomping!
