March 10th is National Blueberry Popover Day
you're looking for something to do today then pop on over to your
kitchen because today is National Blueberry Popover Day!
like a blueberry muffin, but not quite! Let's get right into
celebrating National Blueberry Popover Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Today is a holiday for the same reason that most food
are celebrated... people love blueberry popovers! They're easy to make
and they are a great breakfast food. Popovers have been
since before the 1850's, but from that year you'll find the oldest
known reference to popovers in a letter written by E.E. Stuart. And it
wasn't until 1876 that the first popover recipe was printed in a
cookbook called Practical Cooking. But what exactly is a popover?
it's made from an egg batter that is pretty much an Americanized
version of Yorkshire pudding. So you're not starting off with a buttery
muffin mix. But you do bake them in a muffin pan and as they cook
you'll start to see why they're called popovers. They start to rise
above the pan and "pop over" the edges. And as they do this the center
is actually lifting up with it, which leaves a hollow dome on the
bottom of each popover. It's kind of surprising if you take your first
bite and are expecting a full muffin texture. To make
popovers all you do is pour your batter in your muffin tin and then
sprinkle a few fresh or frozen blueberries into each compartment. Now
as they rise, the tops will be a little distorted as the batter rises
around the blueberries. Then you just pop them out of the pan and
sprinkle them with something sweet like honey or powdered sugar if you
like. Enjoy this not so unhealthy version of the blueberry
So how can you celebrate today? Well, you can search around
for a local bakery or grocery store that bakes up blueberry popovers
daily. If you're lucky enough to find one then celebrating
will be pretty simple for you. That way if you don't really
them then you only paid for one and didn't waste your time making a
whole batch... but I'm sure you'll enjoy them! Or you could
a stab at making some yourself! You can find popover mixes if
want to make these as quickly as possible and then just get a bag of
frozen blueberries. Or you can make the batter from scratch,
which really isn't that difficult at all. This is one of the
easiest recipes I've made so far this year and I made it from scratch.
If you can plan a little in advance you can whip these up
everyone else is sleeping and then have them wake up to the smell of
blueberries. Then pop a popover down in front of them and
their day off right! That's probably the best way to get
to enjoy celebrating a holiday like this every year. And why
get a little creative with that dome on the bottom? Flip your
popover upside down and fill it with something special. Maybe
some butter, a tiny scoop of ice cream or some whipped topping.
Enjoy your day and see how many people decide to "popover"
they know you're cooking!
