May 14th is National Buttermilk Biscuit Day
you're looking for something to do today then slap some butter on some
flaky biscuits because it's National Buttermilk Biscuit Day!
sure you can find an excuse to munch on a few! Let's get
into celebrating National Buttermilk Biscuit Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Today is a holiday because this is probably one of the
common biscuits you'll have served up to you in the United States. Some
of you might have already celebrated today without even knowing it;
that's how popular they are! These aren't the type of biscuits you'd
find in the United Kingdom or the kind you'd give to your dog... No
these are light, flaky and oh so good, so why not celebrate them?
The secret ingredient which makes these biscuits so unique is
buttermilk, which originally was just the liquid left over after you
churned butter. It would be allowed to sit for a while and the bacteria
in it would create lactic acid and ferment the milk a bit.
doesn't sound too tasty but the lactic acid keeps bad stuff from
growing in their and it increased the shelf life. Down with the bad
stuff and up with the long-lasting buttermilk! But now a days
milk is pasteurized, homogenized and then they add in their own lactic
acid culture in an attempt to make it like the buttermilk of old. They
sometimes even add salt into the mix, yum huh? So things aren't quite
the same today but either way, buttermilk is a very thick milk that
helps add to the flavor and texture of the buttermilk biscuits we know
and love. Pass the butter please!
So, how can you celebrate today? Well, I'm willing to bet you
could go to almost any local, family restaurant in your area and
they're going to have some buttermilk biscuits waiting for you. So why
not take your family, friends or lover out to a nice dinner tonight?
Order up something tasty with some buttermilk biscuits on the side and
enjoy the satisfactory feelings of celebration. And guess
what? You don't have to do the dishes!
Or you're always
welcome to whip up your own buttermilk biscuits at home. You can get
ready-made mixes or make them from scratch. Either way, it's not going
to take long at all! Just make sure to leave the mix nice and crumbly.
If you whip it up too smooth then the biscuits won't be that flaky, but
really I guess that's all up to you and how you want your biscuits to
be! Plus you can add in any flavorful ingredient you want
the mix to make some unique buttermilk biscuits. You can add in onions,
garlic, cheeses and any spice you can think of! Heck, toss
meat into the mix like some crumbled bacon or even some
Experiment with the flavors and you might come up with your new
favorite biscuit recipe... if not, the dog will love them!
your day and butter those biscuits!
