October 30th is National Candy Corn Day
you're looking for something to do today then hold out your hand...
it's National Candy Corn Day! Are you ready for your sugar high?
Well then, let's get right into celebrating National Candy Corn
WHY IS THIS A
Well, sugar is quite an addicting substance and when you bite
into candy corn your tongue is slapped with a whole lot of sugar! So
yeah, these things do taste pretty good, which is half the reason they
are so popular... but the sugar content will get you addicted to these
babies! You'll eat them until you're sick and then you'll look forward
to a day where you have another excuse to eat them. And it appears that
someone is feeding the world's candy corn addiction by creating this
holiday! Oh, you don't think people are addicted to candy corn?
Well, the National Confectioners Association says that 20 million
pounds of candy corn are sold each year! Oh, you know... that's just
over 9,000 TONS of it! No big deal, right? But Brach's (a candy
company) says they sell enough candy corn annually to circle the earth
4.25 times, if you lay the candy end to end. I'd call that a pretty big
But why is it so addicting? Well, it all started way
back in the 1880's thanks to George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy
Company. It's made to look like kernels of corn, but it's three times
the size and it has three layers of color: yellow, orange and white.
And these little candies not only have sugar in them, but they also
have corn syrup! Ah, now it makes sense... doubling up on the addictive
sweets! But wait... they also add in fondant (a type of icing) for
texture and marshmallows for softness. So it's all kinds of addicting
sweetness! It's OK, you may binge today!
So, how can you celebrate today? Well, if you're a true
addict then you probably already have a bag or two in your house right
now! So why don't you go ahead and dip your hand in... oh, you already
are eating some? Hmm... well, then go ahead and share some with others
around you. Don't tell me no! But if you don't have any then
head to the candy aisle and pick up some. You can get the regular candy
corn if you like but there are many different versions out there. There
is Indian Corn for Thanksgiving, Reindeer Corn for Christmas, Cupid
Corn for Valentine's Day and Bunny Corn for Easter... but there are
also plenty of different flavors that will be available during this
season. I've even seen candy corn with chocolate involved!
do you think you could successfully make your own candy corn? I'm not
sure if I could but you could always make sweet treats that are
inspired by candy corn. You could make an interesting pie with a
yellowish, cookie crust, perhaps an orange cream filling and then
whipped topping or marshmallow cream on top. It'd have the right colors
and the right shape but the layers would go the wrong way. I think
candy corn lovers would let that slide! Have a great day and
enjoy your sugar crash!
