If you're looking for something to do today then get ready for a lot of crunching because it's National Caramel Popcorn Day!  Chew with your mouth closed, please!  Let's get right into celebrating National Caramel Popcorn Day!

Well, we've been on a long string of food holidays so I have a feeling you know why this is a holiday. Yep, people love the flavor and the crunch of caramel-coated popcorn so much that they said, "Hmm, how can we ensure that no one tells us to stop eating our caramel popcorn for at least one day? Oh, how about a holiday!?" I'm not sure who started it but I'm not complaining; I love caramel popcorn!  Caramel popcorn has been around for a long time but the first commercially produced popcorn I can think of is Cracker Jack. And Cracker Jack was first sold in 1893 at the very first Chicago World's Fair. Sure, this is made from molasses, popcorn and peanuts but sometimes throwing nuts into the mix doesn't hurt one bit.

And popcorn that's referred to as "caramel" popcorn will either be coated in caramelized sugar or molasses. But you have to remember that caramel is just caramelized sugars that have been heated up in order to break down the molecules and have them reform into the deliciousness we know as caramel. So whether they use white sugar, brown sugar or molasses, it's still caramel!  So, what's caramel popcorn? Well, it's just popcorn that's coated with caramel and then let cool down so that it's nice and crunchy. There are plenty of different commercial brands available, other than Cracker Jack, like Fiddle Faddle and... Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs? That just sounds awesome haha!  So, go grab yourself a handful of this tasty treat!

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, you might be lucky enough to live in an area that has a popcorn specialty shop in town.  It's always the best to get freshly popped popcorn, straight from the source!  I'm sure they'll even have a wide variety of different caramel popcorn combinations for you to choose from too.  But if you don't have a popcorn shop near you then you have a couple options when heading to the grocery store.  You could pick up some ready-made caramel popcorn like Cracker Jack or any other caramely popcorn treat they have on hand.  Caramel popcorn ball, anyone?

Or you could get some microwavable caramel popcorn to pop up yourself at home!  This is a great excuse to have a movie night with family, friends or a loved one tonight.  Curl up on the couch with some freshly popped caramel corn and enjoy your movie!  Or you could even take a stab at making your own caramel popcorn.  Just be careful not to burn yourself with the hot caramel and get creative!  Toss in a variety of chopped up nuts or any sweet-tasting ingredient you can think of.  I'm sure a caramel popcorn ball with peanuts and Reese's Pieces in it would taste pretty awesome!  Enjoy your day and I dare you to eat just one handful!
