If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to blend vegetables with sweetness because it's National Carrot Cake Day!  A hearty cake topped with a delicious frosting.  Let's get right into celebrating National Carrot Cake Day!

I'm sure that by now most of you are starting to realize that when it's a food holiday, more often than not, there's really no reason for the specific day to be chosen and no real reason for the holiday. People just love carrot cake so much that they decided to celebrate for a whole day!  An carrots have actually been put inside of cakes since the medieval period. Why would they do such a thing? Well, it was because at that time it was hard to get sweeteners and if you could get them it'd be pretty expensive. So carrots, being a vegetable that contains more sugar that most other vegetables, became a better option because they were a lot easier to get.

The origin of the modern day carrot cake is disputed but it's thought to have come from Scotland. They think that the usage of carrots in cakes was revived because of rationing during World War II. Fast forward a bit and you'll start seeing carrot cakes pop up in restaurants in the United States in the early 60s. It was so well liked that in 2005 the Food Network named it as the 5th top food fad of the 70s. I mean it is also known as Passion Cake ;).  So what is carrot cake? It's pretty much a bread with carrots in it; eggs, sugar, carrots, flour, baking powder and so on. So it's a lot denser than a normal cake. And a lot of people like to add some nuts into the mix too. Then you top it with a very tasty frosting made from sugar, butter and cream cheese.

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, you could easily go to a restaurant that has carrot cake on the menu.  Enjoy your meal and then finish it off with a piece of carrot cake.  They might even surprise you with how good their recipe is.  Or you can head to a local store and see if they have some carrot cakes made up for you so that you can eat some right away.  Sometimes they'll make individual pieces or personal-sized cakes for your immediate enjoyment.
Or you could even go to the baking isle and see if you can't find a carrot cake mix.  That way you can bake up a full cake for yourself and celebrate all day.  Invite some friends over to enjoy the sweet, carroty goodness with you!  And if you've got a real knack for baking you can look up a recipe online and put everything together yourself.  It's not that hard to make at all and it's very rewarding to eat something that you made from scratch.  The only hard part is grating the carrots, so perhaps you'll want to find some pre-grated carrots ;).  It doesn't matter how you get this carrot-filled cake onto your fork, I just hope that you enjoy every bite of it!
