If you're looking for something to do today then get your hands on some cheese because it's National Cheeseball Day!  It's ok to play with your food a little bit today!  Let's get right into celebrating National Cheeseball Day!

It's pretty safe to assume that the reason for this holiday is because cheeseballs are pretty dang tasty! No, not people who tell corny jokes... but balls of flavored cheese! After trying out some cheeseballs myself for the first time, I can definitely say that they taste great and I can see why people want to celebrate them!  What's so special about them? Well, there's not much to them but they all seem to start out with the right foot forward: they use cream cheese! Then what you do is soften the cream cheese by letting it sit outside of your fridge for a little and then mix it up with some flavorful ingredients.

You can go two directions with this... you can choose to have a nice sweet tasting cheese (almost like a cheesecake) or you can go with a savory cheese (like a dip). It's all up to you! If you want it to be like a dessert then go with the sweet, but if you want people have it as a side dish or a dip then go with savory.  Then you just let the mixture firm back up in your fridge for an hour or two before you roll it up into a ball. The last step is to roll it in a crunchy coating that compliments the internal flavor. Like if you had a jelly-flavored cheese then you'd roll it in chopped peanuts. Or if you had a steak-flavored cheese then you'd roll it in potato flakes. No, I don't know of anyone who has tried those flavors combinations but you get the idea, right? ;)  Then you just slice a chunk out of the ball and enjoy!

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, hop on over to your local grocery store and check out what kind of cheeseball kits they have.  These kits take a lot of the guesswork out of things for you and pair up awesome flavor mixes with perfect, outer coatings.  Most places should have both a sweet and savory collection of cheeseball kits.  And then grab a bunch of cream cheese on your way out and you're good to go!  Make up a few cheeseballs today and then invite people over to help you finish them off!  You can eat the cheese straight or dip things in it or spread it on crackers or bagels.  These puppies are rich with flavor so try not to go too overboard!  You'll fill up quick on this stuff, which is why I suggested you invite people over ;).  Or you can skip the kits and try to come up with some creative flavor combinations yourself.  I honestly think the peanut and jelly flavor one might taste alright if you want to try that.  And if you're really bold then try the steak and potatoes one too.  Mix in all the spices you normally put on your steak on the inside, maybe even drip in some steak juice from a cooked steak and then roll it in potato flakes!  Could be good, who knows.  But you can really go all over the place with flavor combinations.  You could make a strawberry one with chopped, dried banana chips on the outside.  Or go the basic route of a sour cream one with onion flakes on the outside.  Or you could mix salsa with your cheese and then crunch of tortilla chips for the outside.  Have fun with it!  Enjoy your day and your cheeseballs!
