If you're looking for something to do today then heat up the frying oil because it's National Corn Fritters Day!  There's nothing better than a fried corn biscuit, now is there?  Let's get right into celebrating National Corn Fritters Day!


Why would anyone want to celebrate such a weird food, let alone eat it, right? Well, have you had one? I hadn't myself until today and I have to say... they're not too bad! People love their fried food and corn fritters are no different. And I think we all know what happens whenever a ton of people love something... it gets its own holiday! So that's why we're heating up the frying oil today and celebrating these little deals.  So what's it take to make a corn fritter? Sounds kind of weird, doesn't it? Well, all it really takes is a special batter and some frying oil heated up to about 365 degrees. You mix up egg, flour, milk, melted butter or shortening and maybe even some salt and baking powder. Oh, did we forget something? How about some whole corn kernels? Whip that together then put it in the hot oil by the spoonful and listen to it crackle. It won't be long until it's golden brown and you can scoop it on out of there and pop it on a paper towel.  But you know, there are always healthier ways to make fried foods. Some people will take creamed corn and bake it... that doesn't sound too bad to me! But before you start biting into your crispy little fritters, you might want to put something on it for a little more flavor. You can pop some jam on it, some honey, maybe some cream or even a little maple syrup. As you can see, most people like to add a little sweetness to their corn fritters.  You better get to frying!


So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, I'm sure most of you already know how to celebrate today. In fact, you probably are about ready to leave right now and head to your favorite restaurant. I'm sure a lot of restaurants around you will serve you some nice, warm, corn fritters anytime you want. So head on over there and kick back and relax while you wait for them to bring them out to you. Nothing says celebration like service with a smile!  But you're always welcome to take a stab at making these yourself. Trust me; it's one of the simplest things to make. Just make sure you have a thermometer to be sure your oil is the right temperature and you're set! But you do have two choices, you know? You can fry them or you can try out the baked style. You might want to search around for the baked recipe because I've never made them myself but I'm sure it comes out just as tasty; I love creamed corn!  If you're real adventurous you can make both kinds and see which is better. Who knows, the healthier version might taste better and you can avoid the fatty fried version. But another way to explore is with the toppings. You can try out a variety of different jams on your fritters to see which one tickles your tongue the best. You can see if maple syrup or honey makes a better glaze for your corn fritters. And you can even see what it's like to eat some corn fritters with cream poured over them. It's all about finding out the best way to eat your fritters, because once you find out you can celebrate this holiday the best possible way from here on out!  Enjoy your day and pay attention to your frying oil!
