If you're looking for something to do today then grab yourself a cup because it's National Eggnog Day!  There's always room for more eggnog in your stomach!  So, let's get right into celebrating National Eggnog Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Because people drink this stuff like crazy around this time of year! It's thick, sweet, creamy and oh so satisfying. And, if you want to warm yourself up from the inside out, then you can add in a little alcohol to liven things up. And even if you've never really tried eggnog before, once you do you'll soon realize why people want to celebrate it. That combination of fat and sugar is just too hard to resist... and the alcohol doesn't help either!  The origins of this wonderful drink are a bit shaky, but we do know that it made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to the American colonies in the 18th century. And since people were farming up a storm over here, there were plenty of dairy products and eggs to make into eggnog. And, since brandy and wine were a bit too taxed, rum was the perfect, low-priced substitution. It was the perfect combination of circumstances to really make this drink take off in the "new world". But, during the American Revolutionary War, the rum supply ran a little thin, so people starting mixing bourbon and whiskey in their eggnog.  I don't think that would be too appealing, but what is appealing are all the spices, eggs, sugar and milk that go into eggnog. Sometimes the eggs are raw, and never cooked, so you have to be careful with those recipes, but you can always opt for a recipe that has you to cook the egg yolks. And if you're vegan, you can always opt for eggnog made with rice or soy products or coconut milk; coconut milk sounds awesome!  Either way you decide to drink it, be sure to wipe the froth from your upper lip!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, do you already have some eggnog in your fridge? Then why don't you start out your day with a cup of eggnog? Oh... you don't want to give up your morning coffee? Then mix some eggnog into your coffee and you can skip the cream! Going for an early morning run? Pop some eggnog in your water bottle... oh... OK, that might not be a good idea. Hmm... mix some vanilla protein powder into some eggnog for a post-workout shake? Now we're talking!  But if you don't have any, then you have two options: make some yourself or pick some up at the store. Actually, you could probably order eggnog at restaurants, around this time of year. So, if you want the easy way out, then check and see if any restaurants are serving it or just head to the store, where you know they will have it. And don't worry, most of it comes without alcohol, so the kids can celebrate too! But, if you're brave, you can test out all kinds of different alcohol in your eggnog. I bet some coconut or vanilla rum would be magical!  But if you do opt to make your own, then get it started as soon as possible, so that you can cool it down in time to drink it today. All you'll really need is some milk, maybe some light cream, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and spices like cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. And, if I were you, I'd aim to get a recipe that has you cook the eggs, but maybe you're like Rocky and you're down with drinking them raw. Either way... enjoy yourself!  Have a great day and sip slowly!
