If you're not sure what to do today then get ready for a creamy one because it's National Fettuccine Alfredo Day!  Widen up your noodles and slap on some white sauce!  Let's get right into celebrating National Fettuccine Alfredo Day!


Fettuccine alfredo is such a common and well-loved pasta dish that there's no wonder why it has its own holiday. There is no real reason for this day other than the fact that people love the creamy goodness of this white sauce. So stop with the questions and grab a fork!  This pasta dish was created by Alfredo di Lelio in 1914 because he modified fettuccine al burro so that his pregnant wife could keep her food down. Burro means butter and di Lelio pretty much tripled the amount of butter for his wife and Parmesan cheese is added to thicken up to sauce. Once she was able to eat normally again, he added the dish to the menu at his restaurant called Alfredo alla Scrofa. As you can tell, the dish was named after him.

In 1927, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks came into the restaurant, while on their honeymoon, and ordered some fettuccine alfredo. They loved it so much that they started serving it to their friends when they got back to Hollywood and the popularity of the dish spread like wildfire. They also gave di Lelio a golden fork and spoon and had their picture taken of them eating in his restaurant which was put up on their wall to show that even celebrities love his cooking. It's funny how if someone famous does something then other people want to do the same.  Modern day versions of fettuccine alfredo will often have other cheeses and spices added along with some cream. And you'll often find chicken or shrimp added to the pasta for a more complete meal. Either way, this dish has stood the test of time and has been sliding off peoples' forks ever since.


So how can you celebrate today?  Well, if you want to have a nice relaxing day then why not go to your favorite Italian restaurant and order a nice plate full of fettuccine alfredo?  That way you don't have to do anything but wait for your warm plate of creamy noodles to be set in front of you. 

Or if you don't feel like going out today, I don't think anyone would hold it against you if you mixed up a ready-made version of fetticcine alfredo.  Not everyone has the time, money or skills to cook a dish like this from scratch without messing something up.  Or, if you want to show off your skills in the kitchen, you can find a recipe online and shop for all the ingredients you need.  Toss this together just how you like it and serve it up for yourself and others.  It's not the most difficult dish to prepare but people will love every bite of it.  And hey, maybe you can convince them to do the dishes ;).  I hope your day is filled with creamy sauce and noodles!
