If you're looking for something to do then I hope you have batteries because it's National Flashlight Day!  Things are getting brighter already!  But let's get right into celebrating today!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Because we've come quite a long way from using torches and candles, that's why! I mean, would you actually enjoy having to break out a torch whenever the power goes out in your house? Or how about lighting up a candle to find your keys you dropped outside? No, you don't have to worry about catching your house on fire, finding matches or a lighter or getting wax all over the place... you have a flashlight! So, be grateful that you do, and celebrate today!  And David Misell, an English inventor, is the guy you should thank for flashlight. But he sold his patent, in 1899, to the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company, who then created and donated some flashlights to the New York City police... and they loved them! You didn't have to worry about the smoke (or its smell) from a torch, candle or lantern. It wasn't as hot and it wasn't fire that created the light, so you didn't have as big of a risk. And guess what else? You can turn it on and off, in an instant!

But you know all of this because you grew up with flashlights! Sure, candles are nice for setting the mood and they smell good, torches are handy for outdoor get togethers and lanterns are great for camping, but a flashlight is one of the best options for all of the above and then some! But do you know why they're called flashlights? Because the first flashlights used zinc–carbon batteries, which meant you had to give the batteries a rest from time to time. They couldn't give you steady electricity, so you had to use them in flashes.  Buy hey, you don't have to worry about that anymore!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, why don't you start out by showing how grateful you are for your flashlight and pop some new batteries in it? It gives your flashlight some extra juice and, whenever you need it next time, you get a whole lot of light! I know how bad it sucks to grab a flashlight, head into the dark, turn the flashlight on and all you have is a dim, flickering light. So skip the hassle and get all of your flashlights charged up today!  But if you don't have batteries, or heck if you don't have a flashlight, then you need to head to the store. And before you tell me you don't need one, let me cut the power to your house for a second. OK, so I'm not really going to do that, but having a working flashlight is a lot handier than you may think. They come in all different shapes, sizes and brightnesses, so take your pick!

And you know, flashlights like having fun, and I'm sure you do too... especially when you're celebrating something! So, why don't you get together with some friends and play a little flashlight tag? It's probably been a while, hasn't it? Well, I think it's about time you and your flashlight had some fun, don't you?  Have a great day and enjoy the light!
