If you're looking for something to do today then get your hands on some ketchup because it's National French Fries Day!  Do you want fries with that? ;)  Let's get right into celebrating National French Fries Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Why would anyone want to celebrate thin strips of fried potatoes, right? Let me try one of these mysterious things... oh, now I see why! They taste delicious, even better when dipped in ketchup! French fries sell so quickly every single day, especially at fast food restaurants, so there's really no reason not to celebrate them! People love them; they eat them all the time so why not have a special day just for them, right? And that's why we celebrate today!  And it appears that calling them "French fries" might stem from even as far back as the 1800s because Thomas Jefferson is said to have eaten "potatoes served in the French manner" for dinner at the White House in 1802. And in the Cookery for Maids of All Work by E. Warren, which came out in 1856, they mention French Fried Potatoes, which was the first time it occurred in print in English. So French fries have been around for quite some time but are they really French?  Some claim they were first made in Belgium, some say France, some say Great Britain and some even say Spain. But it really doesn't matter now because I'm sure a lot of people thought it was a great idea to boil up potatoes in fat and then salt them... I mean, doesn't that sound delicious to you? ;) But seriously, French fries are here to stay in many sizes, shapes and flavors so until we figure out who made them first, why don't you just eat a bunch yourself?  I'll help you out if you want!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, I'm sure you have a good idea yourself, right? Fast food joints! Head to your favorite place and order up a big container of them and munch them on down! And sure, you can get some other things on the side if you want. ;) Arby's might make the best fries in my mind and McDonald's makes some pretty good fries too, but have you tried fries from every place that you could?  Think of all the restaurants in your town (fast food or not)... do they all serve fries? Are you really hungry today? Do you think you and a bunch of friends could manage sampling all the fries in your area? Then do it! Go from place to place, getting a small order of fries each and then possibly jotting down what you think as you eat them. It might even be a good idea to write down if you think they were better than the others too because you're going to be eating a lot of fries today, so you might forget! And by the end of the day you should know the best place to get French fries in your town!  But if you want to relax at home you can always make your own! Get yourself a French fry cutter deal or just slice some potatoes into wedges and get to frying. You can even coat them in olive oil and bake them if you like. Experiment with different spices, potato shapes or even opt to use a sweet potato. Sweet potato fries are pretty dang good! They still count as French fries, right? Kind of? Sort of? Well, I won't tell anyone if you eat them today!  Have a great day and don't get too fried!
