If you're looking for something to do today then I hope you enjoy chilled sweetness because it's National Frozen Custard Day!  Sounds good, doesn't it?  Let's get right into celebrating National Frozen Custard Day!

Well, people love their frozen treats, especially if it's packed with sugar! And it's still pretty hot out, so naturally people are going to want something to cool off with. Sure, a lot of people will go with Popsicles or ice cream but frozen custard is a special, frozen treat that many people love. It's not as common but once people taste it they seem to keep coming back for more. And the fact that it pleases so many tongues and cools you off from the inside out is exactly why people want to celebrate it today!  So what exactly is frozen custard? Well, it's pretty much like ice cream BUT it is slightly different. In the United States, in order to be called frozen custard it has to have at least 1.4% egg yolks and 10% milkfat. At least that's what the Food and Drug Administration says! So what happens if it's only 1.3% egg yolks? Well, then they have to call it ice cream! So add a little egg yolk action and a bit of heat and you can make your own frozen custard at home with an ice cream maker.

But the commercial version is a little different. Ice cream can actually be about 50% air, which is added into the mix through a process called overrun. But with custard they don't aim to increase the volume of the mix by 100%, like they do with ice cream. They only add in air until the mix has increased in volume by about 20%. So, given those facts and the fact that there is a high percentage of milkfat and egg yolks, frozen custard is actually thicker, creamier and smoother than ice cream. I can get down with that!  Care for a bowl of frozen custard?

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, just head on out to a local frozen custard shop near you, of course! There are quite a few places that specialize in frozen custard, so be sure to look them up online so you can get to them as soon as possible. Just search "frozen custard" and the name of your city or town in Google and you're set! And you might be lucky enough to be able to find some at your grocery store too. Now all you have to decide is what type you want to get!  But once you do decide on a flavor, why don't you play a little game? Get identical flavors of frozen custard and ice cream and then find someone you want to test. Blindfold them and tell them that if they can taste the difference between the two frozen treats and point out which one is the frozen custard that you'll let them eat the whole thing. This will probably only work well with people who haven't had frozen custard before, so keep that in mind unless you want to lose out on your frozen custard!  And of course you are always welcome to make your own frozen custard at home. If you have an ice cream maker then all you need is a good frozen custard recipe! You can even make your frozen custard with the good old freezer bag technique. Right HERE is a video of me using that method to make ice cream. Now get to searching for a good frozen custard recipe online and tell me how amazing it tastes in the comments below!  Have a great day and enjoy your frozen treats!
