If you're looking for something to do today then grab a spoon because it's National Fruit Compote Day!  A sweet and flavorful twist for your fruit salad.  Let's get right into celebrating National Fruit Compote Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

So why celebrate today? Well, a lot of people seem to love this sweet, syrupy mixture of fruits so they decided it was a good idea to give it its own holiday. I'm not sure who set it up, or why today was chosen but if you make some yourself you might see why people enjoy it so much!  This dessert got its start back in the 17th century in France. The word "compote" actually means mixture in French which makes a lot of sense because it's usually a mixture of different fruits. You can take whole fruit or just pieces of fruit and then cover it in a sugary syrup with spices or seasoning in it. As if fruit needed to be any sweeter ;).  When it comes to the fruit you use, it really doesn't matter! Use pears, apples, cherries, strawberries or watermelon if you want. Just make sure that the fruit flavors blend well together. Some people even use dried fruit like raisins!

And the syrup can be made from boiling down sugar water, honey or the syrup some canned fruits come in. You can also add a variety of different things to your syrup to help accent the flavor of the whole dish like vanilla or almond extract, cinnamon or cloves or even coconut. You heat all your fruit up in the syrup and can then either serve it warm or when it's cooled back down for a thicker syrup. Some people even like to top it with a little fresh mint which gives it a little extra something with each bite.  The syrup encases the fruit in a flavorful coat of goodness and then when you bite into it you get that familiar taste of fruit. Heating the fruit actually brings out the fruit flavor a little more and helps it blend into the syrup.  Dig in!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, you could head to a local grocery store and see if they carry any ready-made fruit compote. That would be a pretty simple way for you to celebrate.

But we all know that fresh tastes best! So why not grab some fruit and make your own? It's a really simple dish to make and you'll be spooning some of the sweetness in your mouth before you know it!  You can serve it as a side dish, snack or a dessert.  You could even have a little friendly competition today to see who can make the best fruit compote. You and your friends and family can pick out their own selection of fruits and decide on what you want to use in and for your syrup. Then take turns cooking it up and see who came up with the best version of fruit compote. I'm not sure what the winner will win other than bragging rights, but make sure they write down their recipe!  Have fun with today, enjoy the sweetness and I'll type at you tomorrow!
