If you're looking for something to do then let's get that breath stinking because it's National Garlic Day!  You have to love when a food holiday is actually healthy!  Let's get right into celebrating National Garlic Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Today is a holiday because tons of other people, including myself, love adding this lovely bulb to a wide variety of dishes. It's got a strong flavor that adds something special to your meal along with having a lot of health benefits. So today you have no excuse not to break out some cloves of garlic and start adding flavor to your life!  Garlic is in the onion family and the cloves of the plant are added to food and eaten or are used for medicinal purposes. The beauty about garlic is that when it's in or on your food; you know it's there! Its smell is just as strong as the flavor, so you don't have to use a lot of it. Garlic comes in a variety of forms from fresh cloves to powdered and they all have their place in the culinary world. And it's so well loved that they were even using it way back when the Giza pyramids were built!

Plus there are a handful of different health benefits you can gain from having garlic in your diet. It has been shown to have antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties. It can help prevent certain types of cancer and it's been said that garlic will protect your heart from cholesterol build up. But some recent studies have shown that the cholesterol claims might not be true. But garlic has been shown to prevent and fight the common cold and even regulate blood sugar levels.  So, unless you're allergic to garlic, do you really have a reason not to want to try it in a few meals today?

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, first you're going to want to head to your local grocery store and stock up on some garlic.  You can get some fresh cloves, garlic powder, garlic salt or even garlic pepper.  I like getting the minced garlic that you can get in jars so that it's easy to toss into your meals as you're cooking.

But, if you don't feel like cooking today, you can also scan the shelves for random, garlic-infused food.  Sure, you could go for some Texas toast but there are plenty of other choices out there.  You could even have a little competition with your friends and family to see who can find the weirdest thing that has garlic in it.  The person who finds the weirdest thing gets to watch everyone else try it out first to see if it's good.  If it's good then enjoy it with them!  If not, then the winner gets to laugh at everyone else's faces.  And if you do feel like cooking then why not try adding garlic to EVERYTHING you eat today?  Things could turn out bad, depending on what you eat, but it also could turn out amazing!  Garlic macaroni and cheese, garlic ham sandwich, garlic and ranch dressing to dip vegetables in, garlic milk... OK, yeah it could get bad!  But, it's worth a shot I guess.  Have a great day and try not to breathe on too many people!
