If you're looking for something to do then get ready to cool off because it's National Grape Popsicle Day!  Perfect timing, huh?  Let's get right into celebrating National Grape Popsicle Day!

Well, it's the time of year when things are starting to get hotter and hotter, so it only makes sense to reach for a popsicle, right? And grape happens to be one of the most popular flavors in the popsicle kingdom. So people decided to celebrate cooling off with a welcomed flavor in their mouth!  But who started this whole idea of popsicles anyway? Well, if you go back in time to 1905 and head to San Francisco you might find an 11 year old boy named Frank Epperson mixing up some flavored powder for soda in water.

He must have found something else to do (maybe you scared him off, time traveler) because he left it there overnight with his stirring stick still in it. Things got pretty cold that night and when he came back out the next day he saw that it had frozen to the stick.  This sparked the idea of making fruit-flavored popsicles and 18 years later he started selling these frozen treats at Neptune Beach. They were so successful that the next year he applied for a patent. He started out with seven flavors (I'm sure grape was one of them) and they came with two sticks in them so you could break them in half and share if you wanted to. And that's the story of the official Popsicle (not just the generic popsicle term). What an interesting history; mistakes are refreshing!  Ready to cool off?

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, head on down to your local grocery store and pick up some official Popsicles. That would be the best and easiest way to get a grape popsicle, right? I mean it'll say popsicle on the box. But, if you consider popsicle a generic term (the people who sell Popsicles might have something to say about that) then you can get any grape-flavored ice pop. And that opens up the celebration a little more.

So search around and find a few different kinds of grape popsicles to try out and then have a little tasting party with your friends and family. If you have kids, they are going to love this holiday! Try to figure who makes the best tasting grape popsicles. Are the official Popsicles the best or is it some other brand? And may I recommend that you try out the grape Edy's Fruit Bars, you won't be disappointed!  Or you could always make your own. Just get some grape juice and then some popsicle molds and you're good to go! You could even use plastic or paper cups and plastic silverware (if you don't have popsicle sticks) if you wanted to. You might have a difficult time getting them to stand straight up though. Or you can use your ice cube tray and put toothpicks in them. So if you choose this option then find a really tasty grape juice or soda to use. You could even use white grape juice if you want.  Enjoy your day and I hope you stay cool you purple-tongued celebrator!
