If you're looking for something to to today then fire up your grill because it's National Hamburger Day!  Bring on the beef!  Let's get right into celebrating National Hamburger Day!

Today is a holiday because hamburgers are so very commonly eaten in the United States and Worldwide. And this is the time of year when people are starting to break out their grills so why not give them an excuse to fill the air with sizzling beef? I've always preferred hamburgers over hotdogs so I'm not complaining but let's take a look at hamburger history.  Back in the 15th century, minced beef was popular in Europe. If you fast forward to the 17th century you'd see a lot of ships coming into Hamburg, Germany with Russian steak tartare on board.

And in the late 18th and 19th century people along the New York City harbor selling "steak cooked in the Hamburg style" to attract the German sailors. But this was really different than the hamburger we're use to. It was salted minced beef, onions and breadcrumbs. Sounds kind of like a giant meatball patty to me.  But it wasn't until 1826 that a hamburger first appeared on an American menu. It popped up at Delmonico's in New York of course. But it's not surprising that a handful of people claim to be the first to start making hamburgers the Americanized way. But it really doesn't matter to me who made it first; I just want to eat it!  Let's slap some patties on some buns!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, why don't you take the easy route and go to a restaurant and order up a burger? And you probably should skip the fast food joints today; I mean it is a special day after all! Go to a nice restaurant and get a giant burger with all the toppings on it you like. Sure it might take a little longer to make but it'll taste better and be a lot healthier for you.

Or you can break out your grill and make your own if one burger just doesn't do it for you. Invite a bunch of friends over, stock up on buns and get to flipping those patties. Try out a bunch of different seasonings and things added into your burgers to see if you can find the perfect combination of flavors. Some might turn out to be disasters but others will be new favorites I'm sure.  And hey, why don't you turn the tables a bit and have a little competition. You always hear about hot dog eating contests but what about a hamburger eating contest? I'm sure there have been a few here and there but now it's time to have your own. See who can woof down a certain amount of burgers the fastest and the winner gets a Hamburglar costume. There, I squeezed a fast food reference in there for you ;).  Enjoy your burgers and hey, are you going to flip those?
