If you're looking for something to do today then I hope you're hungry because it's National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!  Heat up your meat and slap it between some bread today...  Let's get right into celebrating National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!

As with most food holidays, there is no reason for this day to be chosen but it's such a common sandwich that it deserves to have its own holiday. The problem is, I never had one before today!  This meat, and word, comes from the Romanian delicacy pastrama. Pastram means to preserve.  Pastrami made it to the United States in the late 19th century thanks to Romanian Jewish immigrants from Bessarabia and Romania. It was probably changed to being called pastrami to sound more like Italian salami. It's always nice when your meats rhyme, isn't it?

There is a dispute as to which New Yorker created the first pastrami sandwich, but either way it was created in 1887-1888.  Pastrami meat is usually made from the navel end of beef brisket and is covered in brine before they add a bunch of spices. The spices are usually things like allspice, black pepper, cloves, coriander, garlic, paprika and mustard seed. Then the smoke the meat before finally steaming it. The steaming of the meat actually breaks down the connecting tissues within the meat.  Then the meat is usually heated and put on rye bread. Sometimes people slap some coleslaw and Russian dressing in there to add the finishing touches to their sandwich.  Sounds like quite the feast, doesn't it?

How can you celebrate today?  Well, you can easily find a nearby deli or restaurant and have them make you a hot pastrami sandwich. If you've had one before, then go all out and test out some new toppings on your sandwich. Live a little ;).  You might end up with a sandwich you can only tackle half of in one sitting, but at least you'll come out feeling satisfied that you tried something new.  But if you haven't had one before, then maybe you should stick with the basic hot pastrami sandwich so that you can get a taste for the flavor of the meat and see how much you really like it.  With all those ingredients it should be a pretty flavorful meat, right?  And once you get the taste for it, you can graduate up to a variety of different toppings.
Or you could go to a deli or butcher and pick up some of your own pastrami and make a bunch of sandwiches at home. Get some friends together and have a hot pastrami sandwich party while you watch the game tonight if you want.  See who can make the most creative or biggest sandwich... and then see who can finish it first!  Just make sure to get plenty of bread, a variety of toppings and keep your meat hot!  Could be a creative little party that leaves your house smelling like a deli...  I hope you have a hearty day today!
