If you're looking for something to do today then it's time to splurge a little because it's National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day!  Start your day off with one of these messy little beasts!  Let's get right into celebrating National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Well, like most food holidays, it got its stamp of approval for celebration because a lot of people really enjoy munching on these jelly-filled treats. Sure, it might not be the most commonly eaten doughnut, but I'm willing to bet that each and every one of you has had one sneak past your lips at one time or another. And who can turn down sweetness jammed full of sweetness, right?  But it appears that doughnuts packed with treats inside them started out with savory ingredients like meats and cheeses before jelly ever made its way in there.

And I'm glad it did because I'm not sure I'd enjoy a meat-filled doughnut. Plus, for those of you that enjoy jelly on your toast, this doughnut might save you quite a bit of time. Just be careful not to eat it too fast or you'll end up with a trail of jelly down your shirt!  But, even though this is a national holiday, it appears that jelly doughnuts are loved all over the world. You have the Berliner in Germany, then sufganiyot in Israel, in Australia and Britain they're called jam doughnuts, in Bosnia they're called a Krafne, in Italy it's called a bomboloni and in Austria they have the krapfen. They could have picked a more tempting name than the last one ;). But see, people love these doughnuts!  Care for a nibble?

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, your first option is going to be to head to your local doughnut shop or bakery and see what kinds of jelly-filled doughnuts they have available.  You might be surprised at what they have to offer in two ways.  They might have not only a handful of different jellies inside their doughnuts but also a bunch of different externally sweet options like glazes and powdered sugar.  Or... they could not have any at all because so many people wanted to eat them!

But, don't worry... somewhere will have them!  If not a doughnut shop, then a bakery will.  If not a bakery then a grocery store will.  And once you get them you can have a little fun and see who can eat the most without feeling sick.  Or a real challenge might be to see who can eat one without making a mess!  Either way it's going to be a day filled with sweetness... and jelly!  But hey, you might just be some kind of wizard in the kitchen so maybe you want to take a stab at making some yourself?  Honestly, they might be the best tasting jelly-filled doughnuts known to man.  Plus you can fill them with SO many different kinds of jellies that you'll spend half the day testing out each flavor.  Come to think of it, I've never had a blueberry jelly-filled doughnut before, hmmm.  I hope you have a great day and don't stain your shirt with jelly!
