If you're looking for something to do today then get ready for some tasty, jellied sweetness because it's National Jelly Bean Day!  Perfect timing, huh?  Let's get right into celebrating National Jelly Bean Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Well, I'm sure you realize that there is such a wide variety of jelly bean flavors that they're bound to appeal to everyone. So that might be a really big reason as to why people want to celebrate them. And I'm sure we've all gone through the stages of holding onto a handful of jelly beans so long that your hand has dots of color on it. Or you might even have taken a stab at guessing how many jelly beans there are in a jar in hopes of winning them. But, given the time of year, it kind of makes sense to celebrate jelly beans on this day, doesn't it?  Jelly beans are pretty much just a gumdrop with a slightly harder shell that is shaped like a bean. They're made up of sugar, corn syrup, starch, some kind of wax, flavoring, coloring and some other stuff. But I dare you to look at all the flavors of jelly beans out there and still declare that you don't like a single one. It's not going to happen!

But when you think of jelly beans, what company comes to mind? Jelly Belly? That's the company to I'd think of first because they've been around for so long and make some of the best flavors. Back in 1976, David Klein asked the Herman Goelitz Candy Company to manufacture his natural-flavored jelly beans that he'd sell as single flavors and called them Jelly Belly jelly beans. He only started out with 8 flavors, selling them for $2 per pound, which only made him $44 in the first week. But they eventually became so successful that the Herman Goelitz Candy Company changed their name to Jelly Belly and they have about 53 flavors today!  So go find your favorite flavor and chomp it down!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, head on down to your local grocery store or candy store and pick up a bunch of jelly beans of course!  I'd suggest going to the candy store so you can scoop up a variety of different flavors to chew on.  Search for your favorite flavors or broaden your horizons and try some flavors that you've never heard of before.

You could have some fun today by having your own little guessing game to see how many jelly beans are in a jar or any other game you can come up with.  See who can catch the most jelly beans in their mouth from a certain distance.  Blindfold people and have them guess what flavor they're eating.  Or compete to see who can find the weirdest jelly bean flavor.  Or, if you're handy in the kitchen, why not try to make your own jelly beans?  This is something I've never attempted myself but I'm sure it can be done!  It'd really impress me if you made a few jelly beans the size of your fist.  I'll take a pineapple one please!  Enjoy your day and your sugar high!
