If you're looking for something to do today then don't skip breakfast because it's National Maple Syrup Day!  Oh yes, bring on all that sugar!  But let's get right into celebrating National Maple Syrup Day!

Because maple syrup has invaded our breakfast dishes in such a delicious way. And I'm not talking about that maple "flavored" crap either! I'm talking about the pure stuff, made out of maple tree sap, fool. I mean, what would pancakes or waffles be without maple syrup? Pretty freaking bland, that's what! So given the fact that people love drowning food in maple syrup, isn't it kind of obvious why there's a holiday? And, since it's packed with sugar, they keep coming back for more and more!  But there are usually only three types of maple trees that are targeted for their lovely sap: the red maple, the black maple and the sugar maple. Why? Because they have a whole lot of sugar in their sap, and that's what we're looking for! But I wouldn't recommend that you drink the sap straight up. No, you're going to want to boil down a ton of sap. How much? Well, you could end up boiling down 13 gallons of sap into just a little over a quart of maple syrup!

And can you guess who produces the most maple syrup? I'll give you a hint... think of national flags. ;) Yep... Canada! If you go by the stats in 2004, they were pumping out 80% of the WORLD'S maple syrup supply. And if that doesn't seem like a lot, that comes out to about 7 million gallons! Yeah, people are getting their fill of sugar but they're also getting a lot of minerals like manganese, zinc and iron. So it's not all bad, right?  No, it's "all good"!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, to start, why don't you go check out what syrup you do have? Look and see if it says that it is really MAPLE syrup. If it just says syrup, then chances are that it's just flavored to taste like the real thing, otherwise they'd proudly display that it's legit. So, if you find out that you have the fake stuff, then you're going to need to go grab a bottle of pure maple goodness! And trust me; when you taste real maple syrup, you'll be able to tell the difference.  But once you have the prized syrup in hand, go ahead and take a walk on the wild side and start using it on non-breakfast-type foods. Dip your French fries in it, try a peanut butter and maple syrup sandwich, mix it in your tea or even try out a maple hot dog. You really don't know what will taste good until you try it. I mean, there are so many different things that we already sweeten, so maple syrup could turn out to be an awesome substitution!  And you know, you could always take a stab at making some yourself! Or at least looking into the process involved, and leaving the hard work up to others. ;) I mean, given the amount of sap you'd need, you'd need to own a nice little forest of maple trees and wait a while, before you have enough sap. But hey, you can always get started today!  Have a great day and try not to get too sticky!
