If you're looking for something to do today and you happen to like to eat Play Doh, then you're in luck because it's National Marzipan Day!  This sugary treat may look like Play Doh but it's completely edible.  Let's get right into celebrating National Marzipan Day!

Since it's a food holiday there's really no reason for this specific day to be chosen, as with most other food holidays, but this treat is so well liked that it deserves its own holiday.  Marzipan is a sweet, mold-able treat made from mostly sugar and almond meal or paste. It'll end up looking like a big ball of Play Doh that you can color with food coloring and then form into different shapes. The most common shapes seem to be fruits or pigs for some reason.  Persipan is very similar to marzipan, but instead of using almonds they use apricot or peach kernels. And in Goa they use cashews instead of almonds.
Although the origin of this treat is disputed, it has become very common and is sometimes found in the center of chocolate or molded into different figures and put on top of cakes. You might have eaten some marzipan yourself and not realized it!  But I'm not sure why this is only a national holiday when it's liked so well around the world... In Italy you'll find fruit-shaped marzipan... In Spain you'll find animal-shaped marzipan... In Greece you'll find uncolored marzipan shapes... In Latin America they eat marzipan around Christmas time... this stuff is everywhere!  So if you haven't tried out marzipan yourself yet, then today is a good day to start!

So how are you going to celebrate?  Well you could find a store online or a local bakery and get some pre-made marzipan shapes to sample right away if you like. Some people get really creative with their designs so you won't be limited on what you can choose from.  Or you could pick up some ready-made marzipan, add some food coloring and shape it into something creative yourself. This would be a quick and easy way to display your creativity and then eat your masterpiece. And hey, if you're feeling lazy then just eat the marzipan straight out of the package if you're curious how it tastes.  Make your house out of marzipan or your face... make your favorite animal or food... make a cherry and put it on top of ice cream... make a bride and groom for on top of a wedding cake... you can really make anything you want!
But if you want to make your own marzipan, it's really not that hard. There are very little ingredients and if you know how to make dough then you'll be able to handle this too.  I'm sure kids would love this holiday but just be sure to tell them that their Play Doh isn't the same stuff, otherwise they'll end up trying to eat that too after today!  Regardless of how you decide to celebrate, I hope today is a sweet one for you!
