If you're looking for something to do today then I hope your taste buds are ready for National Mousse Day!  This light, fluffy goodness is waiting for you!  So, let's get right into celebrating National Mousse Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?  

Well, to be blunt, because it's freaking tasty! And the fact that it's all foamy and light makes it really appealing to people who don't care for the dense and rich desserts they're usually served. I mean, it does contain the most addicting combination of all (sugar and fat) so of course people are going to get hooked on mousse! And when people demand more and more of a certain food, eventually someone decides that there should be a whole day set aside just for their favored treat. And today is mousse's special day!  And I bet you can't guess where the name came from... the French, of course! Mousse in French means foam or lather and, if you've had mousse before, you know exactly why they chose that word. It's because you whip up things like heavy whipping cream or egg whites and sugar until air bubbles form in it. The end result is whipped cream or meringue, and we all know those are light and fluffy.

But then you mix in things like chocolate or puréed fruit, to really give the mousse some flavor. Chocolate mousse is probably the most common kind of mousse you'll find, but you couldn't really find it in the United States until the 1960s. Yeah, it didn't migrate from France for quite some time, but I'm glad it did! And you know, sometimes people even make a mousse with meat... how's that sound to you?  I think I'll stick with the sweet version!

HOW TO CELEBRATE 

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, it's yet another food holiday, so head to your favorite restaurant and let's hope they have it on the menu! It's a pretty common dessert, so you really shouldn't have any trouble locating mousse today. In fact, you can sample quite a few flavors, if you like, without have to do much more than speak to a waiter. You can't beat that, now can you?  But if you're not against beating up some egg whites and/or heavy whipping cream, then you can make your own! It's really not that hard to do and the only thing that takes a little bit of time is whipping up the cream or egg whites. Just be careful when you're mixing everything together that you don't "deflate" your whipped goodness. That's why they usually recommend that you "fold" in the whipped cream and egg whites. And all takes is a flick of the wrist while you're holding a spatula. You just do slow turns into the mix, with the spatula, and it folds it into the rest of the ingredients without losing its fluffy qualities.  But if you're brave, you can try out many new flavors of mousse today. If you can get it in chip form, then melt it down and make a mousse out of it! How's butterscotch or peanut butter mousse sound? And then you're always welcome to purée some fruits and vegetables, and toss them into their own mousse mix. How's a kiwi or carrot mousse sound?
