If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to put a little something in your stomach because it's National Mushroom Day!  Sometimes fungus is a good thing!  So let's get right into celebrating National Mushroom Day!

You don't like mushrooms, do you? I mean, to honestly ask that question you most likely don't care that much for this wonderful fungus, right? But that's OK because tons of people love eating mushrooms and there are so many different types to choose from. In fact, some people love them so much that they will go out into the wild to hunt them down. So do you still need to ask why this is a holiday? It's because people love eating them!  Yes, mushrooms are fungus which means they don't produce seeds (they produce spores) and they don't go through photosynthesis. That's probably why they're usually not green and they grow well in the dark. They come in many different shapes, but what we're use to seeing and eating are mushrooms with a stem and a cap. Underneath that cap are usually some gills which contain the spores, and when it's time, the spores rain down in a fine mist and the next generation is ready to be born.

But they are quite a low calorie food and, if you eat them raw, you will get a bunch of vitamins and minerals. And if you are someone who likes to hunt down their own food, then you need to be aware that there are a lot mushrooms that are poisonous. In fact, some of the poisonous mushrooms will look almost exactly like the mushrooms you might be seeking out to eat, so you need to get yourself a mushroom guide of some sort to be safe.  Happy munching!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, you can always take the easy route and pick up some fresh or canned mushrooms from the store. Then all you have to do is think about how you'd like to eat them. Fresh mushrooms go great in a salad and you can always toss mushrooms on a pizza. But come on, you can be lazier than that!  Head to a freaking restaurant, man! Can you imagine all the different kinds of mushroom-infused food you can get? Who needs to make their own salad or pizza, right? Grab yourself some stuffed or fried mushrooms while you're at it. It's pretty simple to celebrate holidays like this, so you might as well enjoy yourself!

But if you're a brave soul and trust your abilities in hunting mushrooms then go on out into the wilderness and try to find some yourself! Bring a mushroom guide or someone who hunts for them often and stock up on the freshest of fresh mushrooms. Yeah, you might have a little extra cleaning to do but it's free mushrooms! You'll end up with so many mushrooms that you might have to share some with your friends... gasp!  Have a great day and enjoy the fungi!
