If you're looking for something to do today then brush all your other sweets aside because it's National Nougat Day!  That's right; stop neglecting your nougat!  Let's get right into celebrating National Nougat Day!

Well, most people actually enjoy the taste of nougat without realizing it because it's packed into candy bars with a lot of other flavorful sweets. But without the nougat in the candy bar things would taste a lot differently so today is a day to focus on a sweet that doesn't always get recognition.  Don't believe me? Well, when you think of a Snickers bar what do you think of? Chocolate, peanuts and caramel, right? Are you forgetting something? That's right... it has peanut nougat in it! See, we overlook it.

The word nougat comes from the Occitan word "pan nogat" which means nutbread. And that does make a lot of sense when you look at the ingredients. The Italians call it torrone, the Greeks call it mandolato and plenty of you call it yum, but there are three kinds of nougat.  There's a white kind that first popped up in Italy in the early 15th century that's made from egg whites and honey. There's a brown kind that doesn't have egg whites which is firmer and sometimes crunchy. And there's a kind that's made from pretty much chocolate and nut praline. But all kinds nougat contain some kind of sweet as well as nuts.  So if you're curious as to what nougat tastes like on its own then grab a solid bar of nougat and give it a chomp!

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, you can go pick up your favorite candy bar that has nougat in it if you like. You already know you like it but maybe you can pay more attention to the nougat today. In fact, take a look at all the candy bars you're use to seeing and count how many of them have nougat in them. You might be surprised by how many of them are nougat-filled.

Or you could go for a straight up nougat bar and see what texture and flavor nougat has been adding to all your candy bars. There are a bunch of different companies that make these so don't think you'll be limited on variety.  You can get the soft kind, hard kind or some of them are even covered in chocolate.  And if you're feeling a little more creative today then why not try and make your own nougat? Look up some recipes online and see if there's any way you can modify their recipes to make it your own. Maybe swap out the honey for molasses or maple syrup or swap out the sugar for brown sugar. And I wonder what would happen if you used the egg yolks instead of egg whites?  Plus you could even try making nougat will all different types of nuts; get crazy with it!  I hope you enjoy your day and never neglect nougat again!
