If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to satisfy your sweet tooth because it's National Nutty Fudge Day!  It's time to go fudging nuts!  Let's get right into celebrating National Nutty Fudge Day!

To put things plainly, today is a holiday because a lot of people have a sweet tooth and they also enjoy the crunch of nuts to be included in their sweetness. Fudge is such a commonly eaten confectionery that it's no wonder why people want to celebrate it. And yes, nuts are very often included into the mix; hence National Nutty Fudge Day!  Fudge is commonly chocolate flavored but it can come in a bunch of different flavors. To make fudge you mix up sugar, butter and milk or evaporated milk in a sauce pan and then boil it until you get to the "soft-ball stage".

This occurs at around 240 degrees and at this stage some water has evaporated off, the sugar concentration has increased and as it cools down it'll form the common fudge-like consistency. If you didn't bring it to this temperature then the mixture would never really firm up.  And then you just add in things to melt down for flavor like chocolate and whatever chopped nuts you want to include. As we all know, nuts are pretty healthy, but with all that sugar and fat surrounding it I don't think that's what's on your mind as you're eating it. No, what you care about is that crunchy texture and the added flavor!  So go nuts and enjoy your fudge!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, if you have any local bakeries or candy stores then trust me, they're going to have some nutty fudge! So head on over and see what different kinds of fudge they have to offer. You know the saying "like a kid in a candy store"? Well, when you see some of the huge displays of fudge some places have you'll soon understand what that phrase means. Hey, is this your jaw? I found it on the floor.

But if you want to take a stab at making your own, then by all means please do! It doesn't take long at all; what takes the longest is waiting for it to cool down and firm up. So you know what that means, right? As it's cooling down you could be making another batch! So why don't you think about a few different flavors you could include in different kinds of nutty fudge you whip up today. There are the three classic flavors of chocolate, butterscotch, caramel, maple, peanut butter, mint or you could even go with fruity flavors.  And you're not limited on nut choices either! You could go with a nice can of unsalted, mixed nuts if you want but you can hone in on certain flavors even more if you pick specific nuts. You could go with almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, walnuts, cashews and the list goes on. But your nuts don't have to be the only thing adding texture and flavor to your fudge; you can even add in pieces of dried fruit if you want! I have a feeling you'll come up with some truly unique fudge today!  Get creative and enjoy your fudging day!
