If you're looking for something to do today then I hope you're still hungry because it's National Pecan Pie Day!  My mouth's watering right now thinking about all that nutty goodness!  Let's get right into celebrating National Pecan Pie Day!

Do you like pecans? Do you like caramel? Do you like pie? Well guess what? You're not the only one who just said, "yes, yes and yes"! So many people love this sweet, nutty pie that they just have to have a day set aside to celebrate it. Otherwise people might think they're odd for eating it all day. But you have a good reason to polish off a whole pecan pie today, so don't worry about that!  While people aren't sure when pecan pie first came about, there are some recipes that pop up around 1925. But traditionally it's been told that the French came up with the pie after they settled in New Orleans. The Native Americans introduced them to the pecan and the rest is literally history because we can't really trace it back to the French settlers. But the Karo syrup company says pecan pie was a creation from the 1930s when the corporate sales executive's wife was trying to come up with a new use for corn syrup.  Either way, the pie started popping up in cookbooks like Fannie Farmer and The Joy of Cooking in the 1940s, because it's dang good! It usually consists of corn syrup, pecans, vanilla and salt, but some people even add in chocolate or bourbon whiskey. Top it off with some whipped cream and you have yourself an amazing little dessert!  Are you hungry yet?

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, I think you know the easiest way... Yep! Head on over to your favorite restaurant, order whatever you want to eat and then get some pecan pie for dessert. Heck, you can even go there just for the pecan pie if you want, I don't think anyone would blame you. If you're just going for the sweets then tell them to toss a scoop of vanilla ice cream down next to it and give both the pie and the ice cream a good squirt of caramel topping. Trust me; you won't regret it!  But if you like to cook then you can whip one of these bad boys up yourself! It's not that hard to make at all; the hardest thing to do is wait for it to cool down so you can slice into it. But feel free to experiment with ingredients if you want. You can use different extracts, different sugary fillings and you could even make mini pies in a cupcake tin. What do you think a pecan pie would taste like if you used molasses and butter extract instead? It might be good!  But you know, if you plan ahead, you don't have to wait around for your pie to cool off. You can just keep pumping them out all day if you want. While one's baking, get another one ready to pop in the oven. Then when you're cooling that off you have one baking and you can get another one ready to put in the oven. Once you think you have enough pecan pies you can start thinking of who you want to give the first pie to, since it should be ready to eat. Maybe you have someone you really like that you want to impress or maybe you want to surprise your grandma and cook for her for once. Either way, it should be a fun day of handing out pies, just don't forget to save one for yourself when you get home!  Have a great day and enjoy the sweetness!
