If you're not sure what to do today then grab yourself a plate because it's National Pie Day!  You have TONS of different pies to choose from too!  Let's get right into celebrating National Pie Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

This holiday was actually created by the American Pie Council, ever hear of them? Me either, until today! But they set up this holiday to celebrate the long tradition of pie making and eating. I'm sure that throughout the years of your life you've eaten a handful of different varieties of pie, so why not have a slice today to celebrate?  Pie can be filled with a variety of different things and then is enclosed in a nice pastry shell. But when exactly did pie making begin?

Well, you might be surprised to find out that the first pie popped up around 9500 B.C. during the New Stone Age! These pies were called galettes which were oats, barley, wheat or rye wrapped around honey. They were all about the sweetness!  It is then believed that the Ancient Greeks were the first to create pastry shells and then wrap them around meat for a juicy and portable meal. The Romans loved the idea and started adding salt and spices to lengthen the "life" of their pie.  So as you can see, the tradition of making pies has been around for ages and you can opt for sweet or a meaty meal! Just try to resist the "humorous" tradition that started back in 1909; pie throwing. Save the smashing of a pie into someone's face for all the other days of the year; put it in your mouth instead!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, if you're going out to eat tonight then be sure to order a slice of pie for everyone for dessert!  That's probably the easiest option.  Or you could go to the store and find a ready-made pie or a frozen pie that you can eat at home.  Still an easy option and you end up with more pie ;).  Or you could find a recipe online or in a cookbook and make your own pie.  It's really satisfying when you put in some time in the kitchen and end up with such a tasty creation.

But hey, don't be greedy... share with your friends and family!  And if you're feeling really nice, why not take a pie to your neighbor or someone you who would really appreciate it?  But don't think that you're limited on the types of pies you can buy or make today.  If you want to have a "meal" pie then you could make something like a chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie or a quiche.  And then of course you can make a dessert pie, where you'll have almost limitless options.  Some of the most common pies in this category would be apple pie, cherry pie, key lime pie, lemon meringue pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie and of course sweet potato pie!  So as you can see, you have a variety of different choices you can make to celebrate today and I hope it's a great day for you!
