If you're looking for something to do today then crank up the Rupert Holmes because it's National Pina Colada Day!  Yes I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. ;)  Let's get right into celebrating National Pina Colada Day!

Because it's a freaking delicious drink; that's why! No really... have you had one? Even if you don't like coconut or pineapple that much, you might be surprised how much you enjoy this drink. I mean it's been the official beverage of Puerto Rico since 1978, so it has to be pretty dang good, right? Well, I'm here to tell you that it is and tons of other people agree with me. And that's exactly why they wanted to celebrate this drink today.  But some people aren't too sure where this drink came from. Some people think a Puerto Rican pirate named Roberto Cofresí made a drink from coconut, pineapple and white rum to boost the morale of his crew. But then of course he died in 1825 and the recipe disappeared. But in December of 1922, TRAVEL magazine mentioned a pina colada drink that had pineapple, ice, sugar, lime and Bacardi rum... but no coconut. So was that the start?

Or do you believe that Ramon “Monchito” Marrero created this drink on August 16 in 1954 while working at Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico? The story goes that Ramon was challenged to create a drink to please their star-studded clientele. And in 3 months he came up with the pina colada which used coconut cream, pineapple juice and rum. It was even sometimes garnished with a pineapple wedge or a maraschino cherry. But it really doesn't matter which story you want to believe because the drink is here now...  And I think you should take a sip!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, let me recommend an amazing way to celebrate. Find a nice restaurant that serves pina colada and also has an outdoor eating area. Head on over to this restaurant maybe an hour before sunset and be sure to get a table outside. Order your meal and of course a pina colada and get ready to relax. It's hot out, but the sun's going down and you have a cool drink on the way. Sip down your pina colada as you gaze into the sunset and try to tell me that this isn't the best way to celebrate today. And hey, if you can't drink alcohol or you don't like to then you can get a pina colada without rum; some places call it a Not-a-Colada.  But if you'd rather mix up a bunch of pina coladas at home, so that you can drink it all day, then go ahead and get some coconut cream, pineapple juice, rum and maybe even some maraschino cherries. Since it is hot out, I would recommend that you lightly blend it with some ice to help you keep cool today.  But if the drink isn't enough of a celebration for you then you can go on a pina colada hunt! Gather up some friends and head out to the store to see what pina colada flavored things you can find. I've had pina colada chocolates, I've seen pina colada gum and I'm almost certain there are some pina colada scented candles out there - just don't try to eat these. Round up your pina colada treats, sample them and see which ones are the closest to the pina colada flavor you're use to.  Have a great day but I hope that you don't actually get caught in the rain, at least not while you're drinking a pina colada! ;)
