February 26th is National Pistachio Day
you're looking for something to do today then grab a bowl of nuts
because it's National Pistachio Day! A day filled with green
and shell cracking! Let's get right into celebrating National
WHY IS THIS A
Today is a holiday because of the mass amounts of people
enjoy these green nuts. There might be a little more work involved in
eating them, if they're not already de-shelled, but the unique flavor
is too good to pass up for some. And that is exactly why they are being
celebrated today! There is no reason for the specific day chosen at
all. Pistachios are native to Middle Eastern countries like
Turkey, Iran and Syria but they were eventually brought to places like
Australia, California and New Mexico to be cultivated. It's a desert
plant that grows very well in salty soil.
And a pistachio tree
will actually put out about 50,000 nuts (actually seeds) every two
years. Talk about a heavy producing plant! As the pistachios
ripen the shell changes to a yellowish/red color and partially pops
open. This natural process actually helps us out because now they're
easy to break open with just your fingers. They have a unique taste and
are very beneficial in terms of cholesterol levels. So are
ready to crack open some yourself?
So how can you celebrate today? Well, you can head on down to
a local store and pick up a bunch of pistachios to munch on. Pretty
simple, huh? You can get them with or without shells but if you decide
to get the ones with shells then you can have a little fun with them.
two bags of pistachios with shells on them and then invite over a few
friends. Then divide up one of the bags between you and your friends
and get a timer of some sort. Set the clock to countdown maybe 3
minutes and then see who can eat the most pistachios in that time.
It'll be quite a task since you'll have to break them out of their
shells first; some of them can be really difficult to get open. And the
winner gets the other bag of pistachios to take home! Or if
want to explore other pistachio treats you can head to the freezer
aisle and see if they have some pistachio ice cream. The unique flavor
of pistachios actually goes well with sweets. Or you can look around
for some pistachio pudding or pistachio salad. The salad is a
sweet-tasting salad that has whipped cream, canned fruit and then
cottage cheese or marshmallows. Or head to the deli and see if they
have any mortadella, which is an Italian sausage that actually has
pistachios in it! I bet you didn't think you'd end up with pistachios
in your sandwich, huh? You're not going to be limited on the types of
foods you can celebrate with today when it comes to pistachios.
Whatever you decide to do I hope it's a good day for you and
fun cracking those shells!
