If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to eat something you probably already planned on eating!  That's right; it's National Potato Day!  Let's get right into celebrating this spud-filled holiday!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

I'm not sure why anyone would ask that question but I'll go ahead and answer it anyway. Potatoes are literally everywhere and they pop up in food that so many people eat on a daily basis. They're eaten so much it's almost more of an addiction than people just loving potatoes... but hey, it's not a bad addiction! And we all know what happens when a food's popularity reaches that level... a holiday is set up in its honor! Yes, it really is that simple...  These edible tubers grow underground and you have to dig them up before you can munch on them. Which is why you should always wash your potatoes off before you get into cooking them. Unless of course you enjoy a little dirt in your food; you never know! But the plant itself actually produces some pretty flowers and can you guess how many different varieties of potatoes there are worldwide? Oh, just about FIVE THOUSAND!

I can't see anyone getting sick of potatoes when you have that many varieties! I mean, think about all the different food we eat that has potatoes in it. We have potato bread, mashed potatoes, French fries, tater tots, hash browns, baked potatoes, potato salad, potato soup, potato chips and on and on and on. They are literally everywhere and they're a versatile bunch of spuds!  How are you going to be eating your potatoes today?

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, today is going to be an easy celebration for you because of the availability of potatoes. If you want to take it easy and still celebrate all through the day then just go out to eat all day. Get some hash browns with your breakfast, some French fries with your lunch and a baked potato with your dinner. Pretty basic, right? But hey, don't be afraid to step outside of what you're use to and try something else that has potatoes in them that you've never had before!

But if you're all about cooking for yourself then just go on a hunt for some good potato-infused recipes, stock up on a variety of spuds and get to cooking! Get creative and see what you can come up with. You could make some potato waffles or pancakes and potato rolls or bread. And hey, go crazy and make a THRICE-baked potato... that will blow some minds!  But if you don't live alone and people are use to you cooking then why don't you keep lacing the food with potatoes and see if anyone notices. Try your best to include potatoes in about everything in each of your meals and see if anyone says anything. You might be surprised; they may not even notice that anything is out of the ordinary! But you can pat them on the back at the end of the day and tell them that they unknowingly just celebrated National Potato Day!  Have a great day and enjoy your taters!
