If you're looking for something to do today then get ready for some fluffy sweetness because it's National Pound Cake Day!  Cake so full of flavor that you don't need icing!  Let's get right into celebrating National Pound Cake Day!

This food holiday is no different than most, in that there's no real reason for the day chosen... people just like pound cake so much that they wanted to celebrate it for a day!  But what exactly is pound cake? Traditionally a pound cake is made with a pound of flour, a pound of butter, a pound of eggs, and a pound of sugar. So you can see why they call it a pound cake, even though your batter will end up weighing around four pounds, since each ingredient in the cake is measured by the pound.

But this makes a HUGE cake, so most pound cake recipes scale things down a bit while sticking to the original ratio of 1 to 1 to 1 to 1, in terms of weight. This makes for a smaller cake, that will actually get eaten while it's still fresh, but it's still considered a pound cake.  And some people add in extracts for flavor, dried fruit for a little something extra, baking powder for a less dense cake or cooking oil is used instead of some or all of the butter to make a more moist cake.  Either way you decide to make it, I'm sure it'll be a tasty treat!

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, some people make it easy for you and have some ready-made pound cakes waiting for you to slice into! You can head to your local bakery or grocery store to see if they have some. But if they don't, there is actually canned pound cake! Weird, huh?  But hey, it's quick and easy to get into your mouth!   Of course, when you have someone makes a pound cake for you it's not going to be as fresh and moist as it would be if you made it yourself. So why not scan the aisles in your grocery store until you find a simple pound cake mix that you can mix together? That way you'll be able to enjoy pound cake in its best possible form. Trust me, it's worth it!

And if you're feeling a bit adventurous then why not try a traditional pound cake recipe? Yes, that's right, you're going to need to break out your scale! Measure out a pound of each ingredient, add in any other sweet additions you like and then hope that you can find a pan big enough to bake it in.   When you're done mixing up all the batter you'll know what I mean; it makes a BIG cake! If you go with this option then you're going to want to invite some people over to help you finish it off.  Otherwise you'll be munching on this cake all week! How's sliced pound cake instead of bread on your sandwich sound? Yum ;)!  Have a wonderfully cake-filled day!
