If you're looking for something to do today then think orange because it's National Pumpkin Day!  You probably already have a couple at your house, don't you?  Well, let's get right into celebrating National Pumpkin Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Well, do you know what time of year it is? This is about the time of year that people are harvesting pumpkins, right? I mean, Halloween is just around the corner so I'm sure a lot of people have already started carving up a bunch of pumpkins. And then you have Thanksgiving, which is about a month away, but this is about the time of year that all kinds of pumpkin-infused treats start popping up. They've been harvested and the pumpkins are fresh so why not celebrate the harvest and give pumpkins their own special day?  I'm sure all of you know what a pumpkin looks like... It's orange or maybe even yellow and weighs anywhere from 9 pounds up to 75+ pounds. But have you seen white pumpkins? What about the green ones? Better yet, have you seen a red pumpkin? Yeah... there really are red pumpkins out there! I'm not sure if the flavor really changes much, but you do have a variety to choose from.

Pumpkins are usually planted in July and they need quite a good amount of water to survive. You won't be seeing pumpkins popping up in the desert any time soon! But why do we eat them, right? Well for one, they taste good! And they're actually pretty healthy because they contain things like vitamin A, lutein, alpha carotene and beta carotene. But of course, being the humans that we are, we kind of ruin the healthy quality of the pumpkin by adding in a ton of sugar, butter and lots of other things when we make our pumpkin treats. But hey, 'tis the season!  Let's get to pleasing those taste buds!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, today is all about pumpkins but that doesn't really mean that you have to eat them. You could be a bit traditional and carve up a pumpkin tonight. It's a fun tradition and you're not limited one bit on what you can carve into it. Carve a picture of your face into it if you want to scare the neighbors... just kidding! ;)  But even still, you can stay a bit traditional and make a pumpkin pie. You can't go wrong with that! In fact, skip making it and just go out to eat and order pumpkin pie as a dessert. There's no reason to be stuck in the kitchen all day, is there? You might even be able to swing by a bakery and pick up some pumpkin bread.

But think of all the pumpkin treats you could make today. I mean, outside of pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread and pumpkin seeds, there are a lot of options. You could make pumpkin cake, cookies or brownies. You could make pumpkin pancakes, like I did recently. You could make a pumpkin smoothie or a milkshake. Heck, while you're at it, why don't you make some pumpkin ice cream?  Have a great day and enjoy the pumpkin goodness!
