If you're looking for something to do today then grab yourself a fork because it's National Pumpkin Pie Day!  I'm sure you already have one waiting for you anyway!  But let's get right into celebrating National Pumpkin Pie Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Because pumpkin pie is eaten so often around this time of year, that's why! Thanksgiving wasn't too long ago, today might happen to also be Christmas and pumpkins weren't harvested that long ago either. It's a very popular pie and it's a very popular time to be eating it. So not only do you have tons of people that want to eat it, but it's also feeding time! So you better just stand back and let people celebrate.  But Mexicans had their hands on these lovely pumpkins possibly as far back as 7000 BC, until they were eventually exported to France. And then it hopped on over to England and people were quite happy to welcome pumpkins into their pies. In fact, many pumpkin pie recipes started to pop up in 17th century English cookbooks. But the funny thing is, the recipes took about two more centuries before they made it into American cookbooks. The pumpkins got their start in Central America and finally made a full circle, back to America, in the 19th century, in the form of a pie.

But can you guess how the English use to make pumpkin pie? They would jam apples, spices and sugar inside a pumpkin and then bake it. I'm sure the results were pretty interesting, but we all know that's not how a pumpkin pie is made today! No... all you need is pureed pumpkin, sugar, condensed or evaporated milk, eggs and some wonderful spices to mix up and pour into a pie crust.   Now THAT'S a pumpkin pie!

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, are you having a holiday dinner at home or someone else's house today? Did someone make a pumpkin pie? They did? Well... then why are you asking me how to celebrate today? All you have to do is save a little room in your stomach for a slice or two or three or four of that pumpkin pie. And don't worry; you won't be the only one eating a lot of food today!  But if you have no holiday dinners on your agenda for today, then head on out into the wonderful world of local restaurants. In fact, why don't you play a little game? Skip a meal, so that you're extra hungry, and then go to a few restaurants and just order a slice of pumpkin pie. Keep a mental note as to which pie is the best, and then go back to that restaurant and order a whole pumpkin pie to go. That's right; you're bringing the best possible celebratory pie back home with you!

But if you want to make your own pie, then why don't you try making the freshest of fresh pumpkin pies today? You'll have to locate a good pumpkin that is grown for pie making, of course, so start searching for that as soon as possible! If and when you do locate a fresh pumpkin, you'll want to slice it in half, from top to bottom, remove the seeds, and then bake it until the "meat" is soft. Then scoop it out, puree it in a blender and you're good to go! Now you can make your pumpkin pie however you'd like.  Have a great day and enjoy your pie!
