June 2nd is National Rocky Road Day
you're looking for something to do today then get ready for some
deliciousness because it's National Rocky Road Day! This classic
flavor combination will make your taste buds rejoice! Let's get
right into celebrating National Rocky Road Day!
WHY IS THIS A
Well, why are most food holidays set up? Because tons of people
like the food! And today is no different; so many people love this
unique flavor combination so they set aside a day to celebrate it.
Seems like most desserts have their own celebration, huh? When
you think of rocky road, the ice cream probably comes to mind first,
right? It's the most common form of the flavor combination, which
consists of chocolate ice cream, marshmallows and nuts. This flavor was
created by William Dreyer in March of 1929 when he cut up marshmallows
and walnuts with his wife's sewing scissors and added them to chocolate
ice cream. He got this idea from his partner, Joseph Edy, who had
chocolate candy with the same ingredients. They later switched the
recipe to include toasted almonds instead of walnuts. And the
reason for the name "rocky road" was because of the Wall Street Crash
and the Great Depression. It was to give people something to smile
about as they traveled the rocky road called life in the United States.
But in reality anything with milk chocolate, marshmallows and walnuts
or almonds can be considered rocky road. In fact, some ice creams today
have vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, marshmallows and almonds. And
there are of course rocky road candy bars as well as many other rocky
road creations. Which version will you choose?
So, how can you celebrate today? Well, you could always head
on down to your local ice cream parlor and get a couple scoops of rocky
road ice cream popped on top of an ice cream cone of your choosing.
It'd be a great time to take your family, kids or a date out to pass
some sweetness over your tongue. You could even make a banana split
with rocky road if you're having a big craving. Or you could head
to your local grocery store and scan the shelves to see what different
kinds of rocky road creations you can find. How many different versions
of the ice cream can you find and which one is the best? Do they have
the candy bar? Are there any other rocky road inventions you've come
across? Then you can round up as many as you'd like and try them out.
And you could even make your own rocky road treats! Think about
it... how many different things are there that include milk chocolate?
Candy bars, ice cream, brownies, cake, fudge and so on. Now what about
marshmallow? Ice cream, cereal, granola bars, sandwiches. And how about
almonds and walnuts? Candy bars, cereal, trail mix and on and on. So
what do you think you could make today that would be rocky road worthy?
Some toast with marshmallow fluff on one side, chocolate syrup on the
other and almonds sprinkled in the middle? Cocoa Puffs with tiny
marshmallows and slivered almonds in it? Or just simply some chocolate
chips, tiny marshmallows and almonds or walnuts in a bag? Mhmm, rocky
road trail mix! Have a great day and smile while you travel your
