If you're looking for something to do today then opt for seafood today because it's National Shrimp Day!  A small food for appetites of all sizes.  Let's get right into celebrating National Shrimp Day!

Today is a holiday because so many people love eating shrimp, in fact well over 3 million tons of shrimp are caught worldwide every year. Yeah, that's a lot of shrimp! And if we're eating them that often then why even question the celebration? It was bound to happen!  And a shrimp is a crustacean that likes to hang out at the bottom of the ocean and can swim really fast backward. And you know, we're not the only ones who love eating shrimp; whales love them too! They're high in calcium and protein but you have to watch out because some of you might actually be allergic to shrimp.

And you have to do a little preparation before you eat your shrimp too. You'll want to remove the head, legs and shell and then de-vein them because I don't think you want to eat their digestive track. Then you can either keep the tail on for a little handle or take the tail off if you don't want to use your hands while you eat them. Then all you have to do is heat them up until they're nice and pink and you're ready for some chomp action.  Now which shrimp-infused dish will you choose to eat?

So how can you celebrate today?  Well, I think you already know the easiest way to celebrate; head on over to your favorite restaurant!  Yeah, you can pretty much go to ANY real restaurant and they'll have some kind of meal that includes shrimp.  And hey, since it's a celebration... why don't you have a little fun with it?  Go out to eat with a few people and then order a few different shrimp dishes and set them in the middle of the table so that you can all sample each different meal.  And try something you've never had before, you know I would!

And if you don't feel like going out to eat then check online for some good recipes that include shrimp.  You can make a big, fancy meal or just cook up the shrimp on their own, it's up to you!  There are SO many choices to choose from whether you want to make peel and eat shrimp, shrimp scampi, shrimp fried rice, grilled shrimp, soup with shrimp in it and so on.  Then all you have to do is go pick up some shrimp and other ingredients at your local grocery store so you can get to cooking.  But you're always welcome to have a little fun at home with all the shrimp you buy.  You can cook up some shrimp, get them ready to eat and then have a competition to see who can eat them the fastest.  Each person gets their own bowl, with the same amount of shrimp in them, then you just start the timer and see who can toss them back the quickest.  You might even want to have some kind of cocktail or butter sauce for each person to dip them in.  I will admit that after a while the shrimp just aren't going to taste as good but it definitely is a way to celebrate!  Enjoy your day and your little bite-sized, pink meat!
