If you're looking for something to do today then I hope you have some milk on hand because it's National Sugar Cookie Day!  Better get some icing too, while you're at it!  Let's get right into celebrating National Sugar Cookie Day!

Well, most likely because this is such a commonly eaten cookie! It may not be eaten as much during this time of the year, they're very common near the end of the year, but there are many reasons why people love making sugar cookies. They're easy to make, are great cookies for cookie cutters and if you slap some icing on them they are perfect for any occasion. With all that love for these cookies, a holiday was bound to be set up just for them.  Now, sugar cookies might have evolved from what is called a jumble. These were common in the 17th century in Europe and they were pretty dang easy to make. The ingredients were pretty close to the same as sugar cookies but jumbles might have been a bit more creative with the flavors and shapes. But by the mid 1700s, German Protestants were settling in a place called Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

And what were they doing there? Well, one thing we do know that they were doing is making sugar cookies called Nazareth Sugar Cookies! Creative name, huh? ;) But this cookie had to be pretty well liked because on September 5th in 2001 it became the official cookie of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. That's a pretty high status for a cookie! And you can make these cookies yourself if you've got some butter, eggs, vanilla extract, flour and baking powder on hand. What? Oh, did I forget an ingredient? Maybe some.... sugar?!  Get to chomping!

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, you could head on down to your local bakery or grocery store to see what they have on hand for you. They might have some fresh ones baked up just for you, but if not you can get some pre-packed ones that are sure to please your tongue. If you're feeling like a little extra sweetness you can always get your own frosting and slap some on your cookies. No one will blame you one bit! ;)

But if you want to make some yourself then you can either grab a ready made mix or the few ingredients you need for sugar cookies. They're a very easy cookie to make and if you have kids they'll have a lot of fun putting the icing on them. Don't be afraid to go a little crazy with your icing selection either, there are a lot of flavors to choose from! And hey, sprinkles are welcome too.  But since these cookies are so often cut into different shapes, why don't you go on a little hunt for some creative cookie cutters today too? Sure, you can go with the basic shapes if you want but I've seen some pretty off the wall cookie cutter shapes myself. And, since I'm a weirdo, that's the type of cookie cutter I'd like to shape my cookies into! Perhaps you should too. ;)  Have a great day and enjoy your cookies!
