If you're looking for something to do today then have a seat next to a fire because it's National Toasted Marshmallow Day!  Hey, yours is on fire!  Let's get right into celebrating National Toasted Marshmallow Day!

Well, there are plenty of marshmallow lovers out there but think about the time of year it is... times are changing, aren't they? Summer's coming to an end, school is starting back up and people are trying to squeeze in as much fun as they can before the leaves change color and they're back on the grind. So it's no wonder that people would want to be sitting around fires, toasting marshmallows and creating a few more good memories before things change, as they do every year. So, it's the perfect time for this holiday and we all enjoy playing with some fire every now and then!  Good old marshmallow root has been used for a number of things, like a sore throat remedy, for quite some time but it's the Egyptians who were probably the first to make a candy out of it. They'd take the sap, add some nuts and honey and they were good to go! Now, today's marshmallows may not even have any marshmallow root in them but they're still good to go... in your mouth.  But one thing that a lot of people have a hard time doing is toasting their marshmallow properly. And even though some people do still enjoy a blackened marshmallow with a melted core, others are still only aiming for a lightly toasted, sugary puff. You must avoid the urge to jam your marshmallow into the flames. If you're holding it too close to the fire, it will ignite and you will have failed Marshmallow Toasting 101. I mean, look at how far you have to be from the flames in order to feel comfortable. Mhmmm; the marshmallows will still get nicely toasted at a distance from the flames. Just hover it over the fire, without letting the flames touch it and spin that baby to toast it on all sides.  Are you ready to take a stab at it?

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, what's the easiest option I usually give you? Yep! Head on over to a restaurant, but not just any restaurant... you have to be sure they actually let you toast marshmallows as a dessert! Some places will give you a nice little candle or burner that you can sit at your table with and toast your marshmallows and they'll probably give you supplies for s'mores too. So that would be a very easy option.  Or you could just invite some friends over, lay out a ring of rocks, light up some wood, whittle down some sticks, pop your marshmallows on the end of them and get to toasting. I think this celebration really is about finishing off your summer with some good times. So tell stories while your marshmallows toast and enjoy the fire as it dances in front of you.  But if you want to have a little fun then perhaps you can get some different flavored marshmallows; the strawberry ones are pretty good and I just saw some coconut ones too! You could also compete with your friends to see who can toast a marshmallow the best. Or you can hold a marshmallow near the flames and take bets on how many seconds it takes before it catches fire. But do you want to try something really interesting? Have a peanut butter sandwich ready while you toast a marshmallow or two and then slap it between your bread and enjoy a warm fluffernutter!  Have a great day and don't burn the roof of your mouth!
