If you're looking for something to do today then let's protect those eyes because it's Sunglasses Day!  And hey, you might actually look pretty cool in your shades too!  Let's get right into celebrating Sunglasses Day!

WHY IS THIS A HOLIDAY?

Well, do you enjoy being able to see? Then that's probably a good reason to protect your eyes from the sun by sliding on a pair of sunglasses, huh? Tons of people wear sunglasses to protect their eyes and even as a fashion statement, so a celebration of shades was sure to pop up at some point. It's the perfect time for this holiday, so it makes a lot of sense. People are going to wear them anyway, but now you can be sure to join in on the celebration.  Before there were sunglasses, in the sense that we're use to, there were things like walrus ivory with slits cut in them worn by Inuit people to block the sun's rays. Flat panes of smoky quartz were used by 12th century Chinese to protect their eyes from glare. And some people even messed around with tinted glasses from the mid-18th century up until the early 20th century. But they did it to correct vision impairments, not really to block out the sun. Like James Ayscough who thought that blue or green tinted glasses could correct some eye problems. And yellow, amber or brown tinted glasses were worn by people with syphilis, because they were very sensitive to light.  But the type of sunglasses we're use to popped up in the early 1900s and were worn a lot by movie stars. Some people think it was so that they weren't noticed by fans while others think it was because they had red eyes from the powerful lights needed to film the movies they were in. Either way, old Sam Foster started mass producing sunglasses in America in 1929 and started selling them on the Atlantic City Boardwalk under the name Foster Grant.  But what type of sunglasses will you be wearing today?

HOW TO CELEBRATE

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, if you've got a pair of sunglasses that you really love then slip them on today! But don't just wear them around the house; go out in the sun and put them to good use. Go to the beach, mow your lawn, weed your garden, get a tan, play baseball... do something out under that big bad sun! Just don't stay out in it too long or you'll end up with some embarrassing tans lines!  But if you don't have a pair of sunglasses that you like, or you just want to update your decorative accessories, then go shopping for a new pair of shades today. There are SO many different styles to choose from and sunglasses are available in almost all department stores. I'm sure you won't be the only one checking yourself out in the tiny mirror next to the sunglasses stand.  But you can have some fun with today too and see who can find the worst looking sunglasses. Get a group of friends together, go to the mall and then go off on your own and try to locate the worst pair of sunglasses you can possibly find. Then you can meet back up at a certain time and then go back to the place where you found them one by one to see whose was the worst. And to make things even more interesting... whoever found the worst pair of sunglasses doesn't have to wear them! That's right; all the losers have to buy a pair of the crappy sunglasses and wear them the rest of the day!  Have a great day; I hope it's a sunny one!
