If you're looking for something to do today then put out that butt because it's World No Tobacco Day!  Resist the poison and help others be tobacco free too!  Let's get right into celebrating World No Tobacco Day!

Today is a holiday because the World Health Organization thought it would be a good idea to have at least one day where people stopped using tobacco products and focused on the negative health effects it has on them instead. Crazy, huh? They want people to stop using an addictive poison that causes cancer and does nothing good for you body for a whole day? Who would want that?! I think just about, well... everyone with a brain!  It all started back in 1987, when the World Health Organization set up a "world no-smoking day" to be observed on April 7, 1988. This was the day of the World Health Organization's 40th anniversary. They wanted people to stop using tobacco for 24 hours in hopes that it would cause some people to quit. That very same year they set up World No Tobacco Day to be celebrated every year on May 31st. Each year they have a different theme, but it's always about getting people to stop using tobacco and in turn save their lives.  The very first theme was "Tobacco or Health: Choose Health". I'm with you on that! Fast forward to 1990 where it was all about having kids grow up without tobacco around them. Hop another 10 years and they get a bit blunt and just say "Tobacco Kills". Which is pretty obvious but some people don't get it. 10 years later they focused on how tobacco companies market to women. All very important issues and there's a new one every year, I just didn't have space to list them all.  So what do you say... can you hold off for 24 hours?

So, how can you celebrate today?  Well, do you smoke or chew? Then maybe you should participate by leaving your tobacco products alone for a day. And as you go without smoking or chewing, make a mental note as to how you feel. Are you breathing better? Coughing less? Spitting less? Do your teeth look and feel cleaner? Are you eating more? Do you smell better? Do you have more money in your pocket? Then ponder what it'd be like to quit all together. Do you think you could do it? There are many benefits to being tobacco-free, so it's worth at least thinking about.  And if you don't use tobacco products then why don't you get some of your friends or family to participate today. Tell them what it's all about and just make it a challenge for them. Tell them if they go without for a day that you'll take them out to lunch the next day. Don't force anyone to participate and don't try to make them quit, just suggest it to them. No one likes to be told what to do and quitting is a personal decision that can only be made when they see a good reason to stop.   And hey, if you own a business then perhaps you could get all of your customers to participate for the day. If people are normally allowed to smoke inside or in a designated spot outside then ask them to hold off on that for a day. Put signs up all over saying that it's World No Tobacco Day and that you want fresh air all day. Some people might get mad but once they inhale some truly fresh air they might change their mind and smile.  Have a great day and just say NO!
